Associate Director, Undergraduate Research and Fellowships

About the Opportunity

Summary and Responsibilities:

The Associate Director will work across functions within Undergraduate Research and Fellowships, an office that integrates work in distinguished fellowships, undergraduate research and creative endeavor, and merit-scholarship programming to serve high-achieving students from across Northeastern University in a holistic manner. Their duties will focus on shaping, providing - and communicating -- comprehensive advising services and programming for affiliates that promote and support self-efficacy, cultural agility, ethical civic engagement, cultural awareness, intellectual community, undergraduate research and creative endeavor, and advanced study.

In our office's focus on research and creative endeavor, we strive to help students enter into projects at all phases of their growth to move them towards thinking and doing with progressively more and more sophistication in areas that matter to them and the world.

In one facet of their role, the Associate Director will help to create, promote, assess, and revise research and creative endeavor activity across the disciplines, including but not limited to our internal research and creative awards Project-Based Exploration for the Advancement of Knowledge Experiences Awards. The Associate Director will help with the refinement (and recreation, if and as necessary) of existing project development workshops and materials and lead programming in this area. After working with students in the creation of project plans, the Associate Director will assist in the administration of our internal research and creative awards, the PEAK Experiences Awards, which run in fall, spring, and summer. As students undertake their projects, the Associate Director will have a key role in designing and implementing cohort-based advising and mentoring for PEAK Experience awardees during the terms of their awards and beyond. Related to this cohort-building work, the Associate Director will be part of our office's work to support a small cohort (five students a year) of students who have earned the university's largest merit-scholarship, the Stamps Scholars.

Working at both ends of the research and creative process, the Associate Director will be part of the team that coordinates the university's autumn Showcase of Opportunities for Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavor as well as the spring Research, Innovation, Scholarship and Entrepreneurship Expo.

The work of undergraduate research and creative endeavor is designed to foster interest in and capacity for advanced study and distinguished fellowships. Fittingly then, the Associate Director will also have a key role in our fellowships process. Working collaboratively, they will guide and undertake efforts to recruit, identify, and mentor a diverse set of applicants from within Northeastern through the fellowship application process. As part of this work, they will also provide support for those interested in graduate studies (Master's and PhD, in particular). Duties will include developing relationships across departments and units, coordinating communication around fellowships, as well as the management of application materials.

The Associate Director should feel comfortable working in a creative, student-centered, collaborative, fast-paced, and deadline-driven environment.

Qualifications:

MA/MS degree in related field required, Ph.D. preferred. Significant experience advising high-achieving students from diverse backgrounds in peer institution and/or teaching. Strong oral and written communication skills with facility in web technologies. Knowledge of and success in nationally competitive scholarship processes, as well as within deadline driven, fast-paced environments. Knowledge of best practices regarding the conduct and assessment of undergraduate research and creative endeavor. Strong writing and editing skills.
