Assistant/Associate/Senior Cooperative Education Coordinator - COE Departmental Co-op

About Northeastern:
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.

Our locations—in Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.

Northeastern's comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.

About the Opportunity:
Northeastern University is a global leader in experiential learning and cooperative education in which students alternate between academic study and work experiences. The College of Engineering is seeking a Co-op Faculty member to work with our departmental engineering co-op students and employers. The Coordinator will work with graduate students with an initial focus to include the following degree programs: Data Analytics Engineering, Engineering Management, Energy Systems Management, Operations Research, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. This is a full time non tenure track faculty position based at the Boston campus, and is eligible for an alternative hybrid work arrangement.

Responsibilities:

Employer Relations and Job Development: The College of Engineering has grown tremendously over the last 3 years and therefore has a large need for development of new employer partnerships. The Co-op Coordinator is expected to increase partnerships with employers by working with engineering managers, human resources contacts, and alumni; develop new and maintain ongoing co-op positions and make appropriate referrals for students to apply to these positions; maintain a current understanding of the industry/field, employers, and positions. Activities to support this endeavor include site visits to new and existing employers, outreach to potential new co-op employer partners, and active participation in relevant professional organizations. High-level customer-orientation, strong presentation skills, and experience in building and maintaining partnerships is essential.

Education of Students: The Co-op Coordinator educates students through their career development, preparing students for the co-op search and work experience by teaching co-op related courses each semester and through individual career coaching and advising meetings. Preparation includes teaching interviewing skills, resume writing, professional behavior and communication, engineering ethics, and other relevant learning objectives. Additionally, the Coordinator will help to prepare the international student population for employment in the United States. The Coordinator maintains contact with students while engaged in their co-op experience and provides an opportunity for students to reflect about their co-op experiences.

Service: The Co-op Coordinator also engages in service to the cooperative education department, College of Engineering, and Northeastern University. Service includes delivering presentations to prospective students and newly admitted students; participation on committees and task forces; serving as an advisor to student organizations or in a professional society.

Integrated Learning:
Cooperative education is an integral part of the academic experience at Northeastern and our philosophy is that learning in the classroom is enriched by practical experience, and practical experience enriches classroom dialogue. The Co-op Coordinator collaborates with college faculty, administration and the co-op community to guide students in the integration of their co-op and academic experiences. The Co-op Coordinator shares knowledge of industry with academic faculty to integrate work-based learning with curriculum-based learning.

Qualifications:
  • A master's degree in college student development, counseling, education, or a related engineering/science or business-related field is required by the appointment start date, as well as a minimum of three years of professional work experience.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, and comfort presenting to diverse audiences.
  • Experience working with a diverse staff and/or student population and a demonstrated commitment to achieving and maintaining diversity in the workplace.
  • Proficiency in computer/technology and database maintenance, and strong organizational skills.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of cooperative education and its impact on an individual's career development.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with an international staff and/or student population.

Salary Grade:

Additional Information:
Please include a resume and a detailed cover letter describing your interest in this position, how your experience relates to it, and how you could contribute to the further development and growth of cooperative education for undergraduate and graduate engineering students at Northeastern.
