Postdoctoral Research Associate

About Northeastern:
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and a world leader in experiential learning. The same commitment to connecting with the world drives our use-inspired research enterprise. The university offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and graduate programs leading to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Our campuses in Charlotte, N.C., San Francisco, Seattle, and Toronto are regional platforms for undergraduate and graduate learning and collaborative research. Northeastern pursues advanced research in security and materials at the Innovation Campus in Burlington, Massachusetts, and in coastal sustainability at the Marine Science Center in Nahant, Massachusetts.

About the Opportunity:
The Tian Environmental and Analytical Chemistry Lab at Northeastern University seeks one enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher to start ideally in late 2021. The research focus will be on developing and applying mass spectrometry and spectroscopic methods to understand the environmental occurrences and risks of organic contaminants. Specific projects may involve developing pyrolysis-GC-MS methods for environmental micro/nanoplastics, developing LC-HRMS non-target analysis method for chemicals in environmental samples and consumer products, and combining chemical, biological, and computational tools for chemical risk assessment. Other potential projects that align with our general direction are also possible.

The primary responsibility of the postdoc is to conduct research. The postdoc is also expected to write research papers, present research at meetings, contribute to research proposals, manage research data and software, and assist in mentoring graduate and undergraduate students.

  • The candidate should have strong problem-solving skills, communication skills, and be highly motivated.
  • Demonstrated research experiences environmental chemistry or analytical chemistry, preferably with small molecule pollutants or polymers.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with mass spectrometric and spectroscopic instruments (GC-MS, LC-MS, IR, Raman).
  • Expertise in metabolomics data analysis or computational mass spectrometry will be a plus.

Preferred Qualifications:
The candidate should have a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry, environmental sciences, environmental engineering, geochemistry or a closely related field.

Salary Grade:

How to Apply:
Applications should contain a cover letter briefly describing candidate's research experience and interests, a full CV with a publication list, Ph.D. completion date, and the names and contact information for three references who might be contacted for recommendations. Review of applications will begin immediately.

The position will be available starting December, 2021 and will remain open until filled. The initial appointment is for one year, with the potential for extension depending on regular progress evaluation and continuation of funding. It is generally expected that the appointment will be extended for at least one additional year if the progress evaluation is satisfactory.
