Position Summary

Reporting to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, with direction from the Vice Provost, the incumbent serves as a highly skilled writer and communicator. Responsible for researching, developing, planning, writing and managing a wide array of communications on behalf of or in collaboration with the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Division of Academic Affairs. Ensures a consistent voice and tone throughout the communication assets. Manages and administers multiple projects, including speeches/talking points, executive communications, memos, letters, newsletters, campus emails and announcements, opinion columns; briefings; and content for other promotional or policy-related communications. Maintains editorial content on the Office of the Provost website. Adapts writing style to various formats and audiences. Advances the goals of Academic Affairs, the University and the CSU. Performs other duties as assigned.

FLSA: Exempt

CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,583 - $13,750 per month

Hiring Range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Recruitment Type: Regular (At-Will)

Time Base: Full-Time

Work Hours: M-F 8-5 and other hours as needed. This is not a telework position.

Required Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's degree in related, applicable field and a minimum of five years of related professional experience researching, writing, editing, and proofing diverse editorial content, sometimes within highly condensed timeframes.
  2. Working knowledge of and ability to apply standard theories, practices, principles and techniques related to written communications in the public affairs media and/or marketing areas.
  3. Demonstrated ability to plan, develop, produce and/or edit written materials for general and/or targeted audiences.
  4. Demonstrated ability to adapt writing to reflect the character, voice, and expressions of another person (e.g., an organization's chief executive).
  5. Experience in, knowledge of, and ability to synthesize and express complex public-policy issues related to higher education in California and the nation.
  6. Demonstrated ability to understand differing stakeholder audiences and differing content environments, adjusting editorial content accordingly.
  7. Strong story development and journalistic writing skills, as well as advanced editorial skills. Knowledge of interview techniques.
  8. Ability to keep abreast of campus events and build subject matter expertise through direct communication with academic leadership, faculty and staff.
  9. In-depth knowledge of overall university communication objectives. Ability to work independently, exercising sound judgement.
  10. Ability to collaborate with other campus communications units to facilitate distribution of communication assets and meet institution-wide communications goals.
  11. Ability to understand issues from a broad, strategic perspective. Expert networking and interpersonal skills including strong consultative and persuasive skills to work with internal and external constituents.
  12. Demonstrated organizational skills, and ability to coordinate and manage complex communications projects.
  13. Demonstrated ability to plan, develop, produce, distribute and/or edit web-based materials--including graphics, photos, video and text—for general and/or targeted audiences via social media platforms, web content management systems or other means such as HTML.
  14. Working knowledge of copyright and other applicable laws pertaining to media and publications.
  15. Proficiency in the use of general office equipment, Windows-based personal computers, and appropriate MS Office, administrative, and online content management applications.

16. Master's degree in a related, applicable field.

17. Previous professional communications experience in higher education, or in a public agency or non-profit organization.

18. Experience working directly with an organization's chief executive.

Required Licenses/Certifications

Valid driver's license and maintenance of safe driving record required.
