Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations

Office of University Advancement and External Relations

JOB SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of University Advancement (AVP) and working within the Office of Advancement and External Relations (ADVEX), the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR) is responsible for increasing Adelphi University's visibility among regional, state, and national private foundations, businesses, corporations, and government associated funding entities. The Director actively engages in working to establish long-term partnerships and strengthens existing relationships with the corporate and foundation sector, as well as other key communities, which result in funding for the immediate and long-term goals of the University.

The Director of CFR must possess exceptional skills in organization and collaboration in order to balance being externally focused in building relationships, while also managing a complex proposal pipeline and process involving a broad range of campus partners. One key partner is the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, which provides direction and support to faculty members submitting government and other fund proposals in support of academic programs and undergraduate research.

In partnership with the Offices of Academic Affairs and Student and Community Engagement, and the Center for Career and Professional Development, the incumbent will participate in the development of a new corporate and community partners program that provides opportunities for students (e.g., internships) and brings additional resources to the University.

Finally, the Director of CFR will work closely within the ADVEX team to leverage existing programs/events and explore new opportunities for corporate partners to support the University. Existing opportunities include, but are not limited to: the President's Gala, Women's Leadership Conference, and golf outings.

REPORTS TO: Assistant Vice President of University Advancement

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
  1. Manage a portfolio of 50+ foundation and corporate relationships; develop and implement detailed moves management strategies that lead to philanthropic commitments that support the mission and goals of the University. Maintain a rigorous schedule of contacts with corporate and foundation representatives and make approximately 100 visits annually.
  2. In partnership with faculty, deans, administrators, and gift officers, develop highly competitive proposals for corporate, foundation and government prospects in support of University goals. Produce, write, and edit grant proposals, letters of inquiry, concept papers, and reports in appropriate language for donors. Maintain a comprehensive proposal pipeline that manages the process of preparing and submitting proposals, letters of intent, budgets, and reports, meeting all donor/prospect deadlines.
  3. In partnership with the Offices of Academic Affairs and Student and Community Engagement, and the Center for Career and Professional Development, participate in the development of a new corporate and community partners program that provides opportunities for students (e.g., internships) and brings additional resources to the University.
  4. Maintain current knowledge of institutional priorities, programs, and events for informed, effective and productive prospect and donor engagement.
  5. Work with leadership in the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs to enhance the collaboration and leverage resources between offices.
  6. Maintain high-quality stewardship process for active corporate and foundation prospects and donors. Maintain accurate and detailed records of foundation gift correspondence and agreements. Work with program managers, budget office, and others as needed to ensure that reporting requirements are met. Steward individual and organizational relationships, providing additional reporting and engagement as needed to ensure successful ongoing partnerships.
  7. Work with external lobbying group for state/federal grants when applicable.
  8. Document all development activity related to identification, cultivation, solicitation, and reporting/stewardship using the NXT database.
  9. Perform other job related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):
  1. Knowledge of cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies and techniques, particularly for corporations, foundations and government entities, with a record of success in generating significant commitments from these entities.
  2. Exceptional writing skills required, with demonstrated ability in effective grant and proposal writing.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of methods, practices and procedures for obtaining information about the giving programs of corporations, foundations and state government.
  4. Excellent organizational, interpersonal and networking skills with large groups as well as individuals.
  5. Self-motivation and discipline to regularly set and achieve work goals.
  6. Ability to maintain a high level of poise and professionalism in all circumstances.
  7. Ability to initiate and build relationships with prospective corporate and foundation donors, and interact via telephone and in person with institutional representatives.
  8. Demonstrated ability to take primary responsibility for a diverse number of projects and to complete them in a timely manner with limited supervision.
  9. Evening/weekend work is often required.

EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Bachelor's degree is required.
  2. Master's degree is preferred.
  3. Minimum of five years of fundraising experience, preferably in higher education (or a comparably complex organization).
  4. Preference will be given to candidates with corporate and/or foundation and/or state government experience, particularly with a private college or university.
