Position Purpose
To provide laboratory support for research that utilizes fruit flies to study the regulation of chromosome segregation during meiosis.

Experience
- Experience working in a laboratory is desirable but not required.
- Excellent hand/eye coordination and attention to detail.
- Well organized and ability to follow directions.
- Good time management skills.
- Willingness and ability to deal with repetitive tasks.
- Basic computer skills.
- Familiarity with Filemaker software would be an advantage.
- May be exposed to the hazards of handling bio-hazardous materials and to the possibility of cuts and burns.

Laboratory/Experiment Support
- Maintains the 18ºC stock collection for the laboratory (>2000 vials/month).
- On a weekly basis, prepares fly stock bottles to be used by laboratory personnel.
- Manages fly food ordering for the laboratory.
- Manages fly stock inventory and records.
- Follows established safety procedures

- Orders laboratory items and reagents as required.
- Maintains ordering inventory.
- Performs general laboratory maintenance as required.

Maintenance
- Cleans and maintains fly incubators as needed.
- Cleans glassware.
- Uses standard wet and dry sterilization techniques to maintain working inventory of sterile glassware and plastics.
- Checks laboratory areas daily for cleanliness, e.g. preparation areas, storage areas, and general work areas, and ensures appropriate level of hygiene for each area.
