Senior Instructional Professor (Open Rank) and Associate Director, Major/Minor in Media Arts and Des

The Department of Cinema & Media Studies and the Humanities Collegiate Division at the University of Chicago are accepting applications for a Senior Instructional Professor (open rank) and Associate Director of the program in Media Arts & Design, who will manage the major/minor in Media Arts and Design, and teach a minimum of four courses a year in that curriculum (course load dependent on additional duties). This is a full-time position with a three-year or five-year renewable term, depending on rank, to start September 1, 2022.

In consultation with the Faculty Director of the major/minor in Media Arts and Design and the Chair of Cinema & Media Studies, the Associate Director will be responsible for planning, staffing, and coordinating all Media Arts and Design courses, including the supervision and evaluation of unionized lecturers. Teaching and the pedagogical mentoring of lecturers are central to this position, and we seek candidates proven to be highly effective teachers across the media arts. Possible course offerings might include media theory, history, and/or practice, as well as the Media Arts and Design Capstone Colloquium for fourth-year undergraduate students. In conjunction with the Faculty Director, the Associate Director will also develop the profile and mission of the major/minor in Media Arts and Design. The Associate Director will help to enable Media Arts and Design programs in the University more broadly, to develop on-campus programming with local organizations, and to explore opportunities for student career pathways. Course assignments and other duties of the Associate Director will be determined annually by the Faculty Director of Media Arts and Design and the Chair of Cinema & Media Studies.

Minimum qualifications are a BA/BFA, MA/MFA, or PhD in a related field, and at least the equivalent of one year of experience teaching at the university or post-secondary level. Applicants must also have a robust digital or networked media art practice, or experience in fields such as videogame design, as well as extensive teaching experience in relevant fields.
