Position Responsibilities:

The Virginia Commonwealth University College of Humanities and Sciences is recruiting adjunct faculty for the Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 semesters within the Russian Program of the School of World Studies. The program is specifically looking for one instructor to teach a World 203 class (“Texts and Contexts”) with the topic about Russia (related to history, literature and culture) and potentially an introductory Russian course in Fall 2023. Your application will remain active for a year; you may resubmit your application for subsequent years. Only those selected for an interview will be contacted. NOTE: This is a part-time, non-benefited faculty position. Adjunct contracts are for one semester.

Course description for “Texts and Contexts” Fall 2022:
“Through the analysis and interpretation of literary, cinematic and other cultural texts, this course explores the ways cultural and national identities have been shaped, imagined and contested in various regions of the world. While responding to the readings and films as artistic manifestations or social documents, students will also become familiar with the aesthetic, political and social contexts in which the works were and are produced.”

Duties Include:
Instruct students in World 203 class.
Meet all designated course instruction guidelines, including course preparation, assessments, grading, records management and submission of the course syllabus.
Grade assignments and exams in a timely manner based on instructions/rubric provided.
Respond to student inquiries within 24 hours.
Submit final grades according to College/Department policy.

World 203 is scheduled to meet on Mondays 4:00-6:40 in a hybrid modality (a mix of in-person and online).

Course description for Introductory Russian Fall 2023:
“Semester course; 3 lecture hours. 3 credits. Enrollment requires any student with previous exposure to Russian to take the placement test to determine eligibility. For students with no prior knowledge of Russian. Beginning grammar, reading, writing and oral skills.”

Required Qualifications:

EDUCATION: Master’s degree in History, Literature, Language or related field. Experience in topics related to Russia.

COMPETENCIES/EXPERIENCE: For Russian 101, fluency in the Russian language. Demonstrated teaching experience at the university level. Demonstrated ability to use modern instructional technology. Demonstrated experience teaching in online formats. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s or PhD in Russian studies.

Salary Range: $1,200 per credit hour
