Job Description:

The Dean reports to the Provost and serves as a member of the academic affairs leadership team. This individual serves as the chief academic officer of the School and is responsible for academic programs and policies, budgeting, personnel and planning. Additionally, the Dean provides leadership for the faculty, as well as internal and external constituents. This School includes the following departments:  Counseling and Applied Behavioral Studies; Psychology, Family and Justice Studies; Nursing; Nutrition and Public Health; and Social Work.  Collectively approximately 55 faculty provide bachelors, masters and doctoral programs to approximately 1000 students.  

The anticipated start date for this position is January 2023. However, a start date as late as July 2023 will be considered if this is preferable based on the successful candidate's schedule.

Responsibilities (Include but are not limited to)

  • Provides leadership in the development, delivery and continuous improvement via program review of academic programs within the School and collaborates with the academic departments that support the educational programs
  • Oversees implementation of professional standards based on best practices, and assumes responsibility for obtaining and maintaining both regional and specialized accreditation and complying with state regulations for existing and new programs within the School
  • Provides strategic leadership and oversight for budget and personnel
  • Supervises department chairs as well as administrative and professional staff
  • Mentors department chairs and faculty, tenure-track, tenured and non-tenure-track to support the University's committee to teaching excellence and the implementation of the strategic plan
  • Communicates the vision and goals of the School to the community and professional constituencies
  • Collaborates with the office of Institutional Advancement to seek funding to support and expand the activities of the School
  • Promotes the university's and school's multi-dimensional diversity, equity and inclusion goals
  • Fosters recruitment and retention of qualified students and provides leadership to students in academic endeavors and co-curricular activities
  • Collaborates with department chairs, registrar and enrollment management to develop and approve course offerings ensuring that student needs are met
  • Serves on University committees, including the Provost Council, Extended Cabinet and other assignments as appropriate



Education & Experience

  • Earned doctorate in a relevant field
  • Record of distinguished teaching and research
  • Prior academic administrative experience
  • Experience in securing external funding is preferred
  • Credentials which merit appointment at the rank of Professor is preferred

  • Able to function independently while operating effectively within a team environment
  • Possess solid technology skills, including working with Course Management and Student Information Systems

  • Exhibits a high level of professionalism, leadership, creative problem solving, diplomacy, negotiation and sales skills, and the ability to manage complex projects with minimal supervision
  • Cultural competency to work with diverse student and/or employee population
  • Commitment to the mission of the University of Saint Joseph
  • Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.


Additional Information:

The anticipated salary range for this position will be $135,000 to $165,000 per year. The final offer will be based on the candidate's experience and qualifications. 

The anticipated start date for this position is January 2023. However, a start date as late as July 2023 will be considered if this is preferable based on the successful candidate's schedule.
