General Summary
The Library Assistant assists patrons in using the tools of research, provides expertise and assistance in answering reference questions, coordinates service at the main desk, and ensures coverage for in-person and online reference services.
Responsible for demonstrating LSSC’s values of learning, people, student success, forward thinking, commitment to excellence, accessibility, diversity, partnerships, and sound management practices.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
1. Interact with patrons at the front desk, including answering phones, checking out items, etc.
2. Interact and provide assistance to patrons (students, faculty, staff, and guests) in identifying, locating, and accessing information on-campus and online.
3. Provide answers to reference questions. Conduct reference interviews as necessary.
4. Participate in the online virtual reference chat service
5. Design and update guides (online/electronic and print) to improve access and use of information.
6. Assist in the development and maintenance of the library’s website.
7. Carry out special projects promoting the library and its resources
Qualifications
EDUCATION : Bachelor’s degree with documentation showing coursework in library science. Candidates with coursework towards an MLS will be given preference.
EXPERIENCE : Experience in public service in a library.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
* Bachelor’s degree with documentation showing coursework in library science.
* Experience with an automated library system
* Knowledge of and experience in using appropriate resources, including electronic, for locating information effectively and quickly
* Excellent oral and written communication skills
