Position Summary:

The Executive Director of News and Communications at the University of Dayton is responsible for advancing and protecting the University's image and reputation through strategic issues management, leading internal communications, and elevating the University's position locally, regionally and nationally through media relations and earned media. The Executive Director of News and Communications, reporting to the Vice President for Marketing and Communications, requires an excellent writer/editor to manage a campuswide news operation with an emphasis on securing national media coverage for curricular initiatives, student and faculty excellence; demonstrated experience in issues management/crisis communications, preferably in the context of higher education; management experience; and the ability to understand complex and varied constituent perspectives.

Preferred candidates will bring higher education experience, an understanding of the history and ongoing importance of the Catholic Church’s social teaching as well as the issues facing Catholic higher education, and a track record of providing strategic counsel to senior leaders. The position requires experience working with diverse populations and a strong commitment to helping advance the University’s diversity, equity and inclusion goals and policies.

Specific responsibilities include:

· Serving as communications counsel to the VP for Marketing and Communications and, as needed, University leadership including the president and cabinet

· Developing and executing strategic media plans for University initiatives and announcements

· Monitoring potential reputational issues and developing responses to challenges to the University’s reputation

· Creating and implementing crisis communications response plans as needed

· Building relationships with faculty to highlight expertise and research with a special focus on identifying and elevating visibility for underrepresented and female faculty and staff

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, or related field
• A minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in journalism/public relations/media relations
• Demonstrated experience in crisis communication/issues management
• Demonstrated stellar writing and editing skills
• Strong verbal and interpersonal skills
• Experience managing a team
• Experience working with diverse populations and a strong commitment to helping advance equity and inclusion goals and policies
• Mastery of AP style

Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

• Master's degree
• Broad understanding of Catholic social teaching and issues facing Catholic higher education
• Familiarity with issues facing U.S. higher education
• Demonstrated ability to understand complex and varied stakeholder perspectives

A federal court on December 7, 2021, issued a ruling that suspends the COVID-19 vaccine requirement that applies to federal contractors nationwide. With this development, the University will pause any enforcement action against employees who have not complied with the requirement to be fully vaccinated by Dec. 8, 2021 or to have requested an exemption to maintain their employment status.

The University will continue to monitor the state of the pandemic on campus and in the community as well as developments in federal and state requirements, and also will continue to regularly consult with public health officials and our medical panel. As has been the case throughout the pandemic, our protocols and requirements are subject to change depending on conditions on campus or in our community, and government requirements.
