Department Summary

The mission of Academic Success and Undergraduate Advising (ASUA) is to support holistic academic services through various departmental programs and resources that promote equity, retention, timely graduation, and student-defined success for all undergraduate students.

ASUA supports developing, improving, and maintaining undergraduate programs and related policies. It provides leadership and input, as appropriate, for changing, enhancing, or improving existing programs and policies. Academic Success and Undergraduate Advising also provides leadership in developing academic support programs.

ASUA is also responsible for ensuring that the laws, regulations, and campus policies that apply to undergraduate education are implemented relatively and are consistent with their intent.

Job Summary

The Writing Center Coordinator works to support the Writing Center, Graduate Writing Center, English Language Support Center, and Spanish Language Tutoring in Writing by providing tutoring in writing to students, developing and leading workshops on key writing development topics, coordinating tutor professional development programs, supporting the building of tutor schedules and maintenance of the student-facing appointment scheduling system, assisting with data keeping and reporting to faculty and for assessment and research purposes.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Assist with the development and implementation of programs for the ongoing professional development and education of tutors, including directly providing one-to-one support, developing, and leading tutor education workshops, implementing and developing tutor mentoring programs, and the development of tutors' own research projects, research funding proposals and applications, conference proposals and presentations.
  • Support the development of the Writing Centers' initial service availability and capacity by analyzing historical demand, course offerings, and tutor availability. Support the building and ongoing maintenance of appointment schedules in the online appointment scheduling program each semester. Analyze the Writing Centers' schedules on an ongoing basis for demand, capacity, and efficiency, adjusting in keeping with the contracts of ISA and GA tutors. Oversee the arrangement of coverage to ensure appointments are maintained. Address student-access issues as they arise, making independent determinations regarding exceptions to student access policies
  • Support the Writing Center Director to develop and maintain systems for the generation and electronic distribution of reports of student conferences to faculty at set intervals each quarter. Communicate with faculty to answer questions and concerns about reporting and will process requests for interim reports outside the standard reporting schedule.
  • Develop and oversee workshops on key writing development topics, such as APA Style, MLA Style, paraphrasing, etc.
  • Assist with the development of marketing and writing resource materials for distribution to students and faculty in collaboration with marketing staff in the ASUA office.
  • Provide tutoring to students, faculty, or staff clients of the Writing Centers in one-to-one or small group settings either in person, synchronously online via Zoom, or asynchronously online via email.
  • Other Duties: Website and Social media support with editing.


Employment Status: Part-time (up to 35 hours), Temporary, "Non-Exempt" position (with the possibility of converting to permanent).

Work Schedule

Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, weekends and evenings may be required.

Key Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of methods and problems of organization and program management.
  • Working knowledge of research and interviewing techniques.
  • Working knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior.
  • Working knowledge of the basic principles, practices and major trends in the Student Services field to which assigned.
  • Ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge of the organization, procedures and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned.
  • Ability to rapidly acquire a working knowledge of the specific objectives of the campus Student Services program an its relationship to the total campus operation.
  • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations.
  • Ability to gather and analyze data; reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Ability to present clear and concise information orally and in written reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations and other private and public agencies.
  • Knowledge of writing center theory and pedagogy.
  • Discerning metalinguistic awareness and working knowledge of formal linguistic components and second language acquisition theory.
  • Knowledge of common academic writing and citation styles including APA, MLA, and Chicago.
  • Must be equity minded and able to work successfully in a multilingual and multicultural context.
  • Experience fostering and maintaining effective professional relationships and a strong ability to work collaboratively across organizational lines.
  • Ability to exercise professional judgment and discretion in making decisions that impact student success, the department, and the institution.
  • Competence in Microsoft Word (including mail merge, comment, and track changes functions), PowerPoint and Excel; familiarity with WC Online or other online tutoring appointment tracking software is desirable.

Education and Experience
  • Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of one year of experience in professional Student Services work at the entry trainee level. Equivalent amounts of graduate level job‑related education may be substituted for the required experience.
  • Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job‑related field. (Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.)

Salary

Anticipated Hiring Range: $3,796 per month

Classification Salary Range: $3,796 - $5,369 per month
