Job Description

The Assistant Dean of Nursing is responsible in collaboration with the Dean of Nursing to assist with providing leadership in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the nursing program. This includes assisting with recruitment and hiring of faculty, creating course schedules and accompanying faculty assignments, facilitating curriculum development, participating in program evaluation, assisting in the resolution of student and faculty issues. The Assistant Dean may have some teaching duties. He/She reports to the Dean of Nursing and interacts regularly with the other departments within the college with respect to the needs of the nursing program for instructional resources. Serves as the Dean of Nursing in his/her absence.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Organization Stewardship

  • Interacts with the academic affairs support staff as well as with other designated clerical staff and work-study students.
  • Serves as a member of the School of Nursing Leadership Team.
  • Serves as an Ex-officio member with vote on the Curriculum Committee and Admissions, Progression and Graduation Committee, and Evaluation Committee.
  • Serves as resource coordinator for Course Lead meetings.
  • Addresses faculty issues and concerns as needed.
  • Fosters positive communication and responsible follow-up communication with students and others to insure a supportive and responsive learning environment for students.
  • Facilitates the scheduling of courses in collaboration with course leads.
  • Facilitates the scheduling of clinical experiences in collaboration with the clinical coordinator.
  • Makes teaching assignments in collaboration with Course Lead and assures workloads are in compliance with the current workload policy.
  • Participates as appropriate on College/School committees and task forces.
  • Assists with preparation of budget and ongoing monitor of such as designated by Dean/DON
  • Teaches as required, and completes other duties as assigned.

Program Development and Management

  • Assists with the development, implementation, evaluation, and revisions of curriculum for the Nursing program in cooperation with the program faculty and within the standards of the applicable state Board of Nursing and any other accrediting agencies.
  • Participates in the systematic plan of evaluation process with a particularly focus on looping findings back into overall program improvement
  • Provides appropriate certification to the State Board of Nursing for students who complete program requirements and are recommended for NCLEX Exam.
  • Ensures the faculty-student ratio for clinical experiences is in accordance with the regulations of the applicable state Board of Nursing in collaboration with nursing faculty and clinical agency administrators when making faculty assignments
  • Assists in developing marketing communications for the programs and in student recruitment activities.

Faculty/Student Development and Management

  • Recruits and interviews potential faculty and makes recommendations for appointment, promotion, retention, or termination as appropriate.
  • Evaluates faculty in accordance with policies of the College/Campus, EA and the standards of applicable regulatory bodies.
  • Develops and implements orientation procedures and faculty development activities for faculty.
  • Collaborates with other nursing faculty/college staff to provide orientation of new students.
  • Interacts and advises students and faculty; problem solves and facilitates with individuals/groups in the interest of student and program success.
  • Documents correspondence related to student and faculty issues.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance.

Professional Development Plan

  • Attends workshops and relevant continuing education aimed at earning the necessary CEU's for license requirements and professional growth.
  • Demonstrates professional involvement and leadership through participation in professional organizations, presentations, publications, etc.
  • Completes College/Campus annual Faculty Development Plan.
  • Pursues DNP or PhD in Nursing degree (if applicable).

Requirements

  • Current active unencumbered licensure as a registered nurse or APRN in state of New York or multistate privilege to practice nursing in state.
  • Graduate of an approved professional nursing education program.
  • Baccalaureate Degree in nursing and earned Master's, or Doctoral degree, in Nursing or related field.
  • At least five years practice experience as a Registered Nurse, with at least two as a faculty member, in a professional nursing education program.
  • Minimum of one (1) year successful experience in an administrative or management role.
  • Competent in personal computer applications: word processing, spreadsheet, database, and email.
  • Excellent written, oral communication and analytical skills.
  • Ability to serve as a positive, supportive, and enthusiastic role model.
  • Successful completion of criminal background check, drug screening, appropriate immunizations and CPR and HIPAA certification.
