Context of the Job:

The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) at the University of Delaware is dedicated to feeding the world and protecting the planet through education, research, and outreach. Like fellow land grant universities, CANR's tripartite mission is the generation, translation, and dissemination of knowledge in the public interest - throughout Delaware, across the country and around the globe. The college supports more than 850 undergraduate students in 13 majors housed within four departments including Animal and Food Sciences, Applied Economics and Statistics, Entomology and Wildlife Ecology, and Plant and Soil Sciences and includes an interdisciplinary Agriculture and Natural Resources major.

The CANR Undergraduate Student Services Office, a unit within the CANR Dean's Office, manages the effective delivery of undergraduate recruitment, academic advising and support, degree clearance and the coordination of CANR's Convocation ceremony.

Under the general direction of the Academic Program Manager, the Academic Advisor II advises students regarding academic requirements of majors and minors in CANR and UD policies and procedures. The advisor works collaboratively with the Academic Program Manager to set goals and propose solutions to advising issues that affect the quality of services to undergraduate students in the college.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Provide advisement services to a combined cohort of CANR undergraduates including prospective and current students. Interpret policies, explain academic standing, review transfer credits and transcripts, and provide general guidance on academic matters including course scheduling, registration and academic /career options.
  • Monitor the progress of assigned student populations. Utilize the Blue Hen Success platform to conduct proactive and targeted outreach, note advisement interactions, and manage targeted advising campaigns.
  • Create programming to orient internal change of majors to the college.
  • Support UD's Finish in Four Initiative and CANR's retention and graduation efforts by leading workshops for various student classifications (FR, SO, JR, SR).
  • Assist with the processing of course substitutions, degree audit reviews, and reporting and data needs of the unit.
  • Assist the Academic Program Manager with the countdown to graduation and degree clearances processes.
  • Present academic information and advisement to incoming freshmen, transfer, and international students during New Student Orientation.
  • Advise students who are in crisis. Handle sensitive information and refer students and families to appropriate support resources on campus.
  • Recommend enhancements to the current student advisement pages of the CANR website.
  • Act as a liaison among various University-wide programs and services which aid new students in the transition to the University.
  • Provide support and referral services to students, working with offices such as the Registrar, Student Financial Services, Center for Counseling & Student Development, Disability Support Services, UD Career Center, Office of Academic Enrichment, and other auxiliary offices on campus that support student success.
  • Attend and assist with Convocations and other major undergraduate events as needed including Major Mania, Explorations Days, Blue and Golden Saturdays, and Decision Days.
  • Identify, train, and utilize student mentors as needed.
  • Comply with university policies, procedures, and best practices regarding protecting data and following UD data governance rules.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.


Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree, Master's degree preferred, and three years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree in student personnel, college counseling or a related field preferred.
  • Experience in academic advising in higher education and a working knowledge of college student counseling and advisement practices at the university level.
  • Ability to grasp, retain and disseminate an extensive, varied and dynamic body of information.
  • Ability to handle highly sensitive and confidential information.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to evaluate student transcripts and/or records.
  • Ability to communicate curricular and graduation requirements to students.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and employ decision-making skills.
  • Ability to analyze, summarize and effectively present data.
  • Effective leadership, organizational, interpersonal and oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to present information effectively to groups and to work productively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Proficiency with PowerPoint, Excel,Word, and shared team drives.
  • Proficiency with a student information system and student success software (such as EAB Blue Hen Success and UDSIS).
  • Demonstrated understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures, and backgrounds.

Special Requirements:
