POSITION SUMMARY

Whitman College is a PWI with a desire to outgrow this designation and a commitment to recruiting, supporting, and retaining a diverse student body as well as a diverse faculty and staff. The Office of Admission seeks to hire a team member with a passion for recruitment, especially in working with underrepresented communities including BIPOC, first generation, low income and LGBTQIA+ students. In the admission office, multicultural recruitment is the responsibility of the entire admission staff. The purpose of the Associate Director is to oversee this area of strategic importance as well as to help center Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Antiracism-informed perspectives in recruitment and office culture; the purpose of the Assistant Director is to play an integral role in helping the team meet diversity-related enrollment goals.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Guide the discussion in the development, planning, implementation, and evaluation of Whitman Admission's multicultural and diversity initiatives and programs, with an emphasis on reaching domestic Black student representation of 10% in the next 5 years. [Associate Director role].
  • Maintain and foster key diversity-related recruitment partnerships, such as College Horizons, YES Prep, Rainier Scholars, Say Yes to Education, and U Chicago Charter Schools, and identify potential new partners [Associate Director role]. Assist leadership in maintaining and developing these relationships and identifying potential new partners [Assistant Director role].
  • Lead the admission team in the execution of Whitman's diversity-recruitment Visit Scholarship Programs (one fall program, one spring program) [Associate Director role). Work with the leadership team in the execution of Whitman's diversity-recruitment Visit Scholarship Programs [Assistant Director].
  • Plan and execute territory-based recruitment. Typically includes 3-6 weeks of fall travel, 1-2 weeks of spring travel, and occasional summer travel.
  • Develop relationships in assigned territories with prospective students and other constituencies through in-person and/or virtual means, including but not limited to: high school presentations, prospective student interviews, community-based organization visits, and college fairs.
  • Review applications and make recommendations on admissibility of candidates as a member of the Admission Committee.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Individuals must be able to explain and/or demonstrate that they possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to safely perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

The ideal candidate will possess:
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and antiracism and belief in their critical importance in a liberal arts education
  • Strong public speaking abilities and interpersonal skills
  • Promptness and responsiveness in corresponding with prospective students, their families and other constituencies both on- and off-campus (school counselors, alumni, student advocates, Whitman faculty, staff, administration, etc.)
  • Good judgment, sensitivity and confidentiality in all aspects of the recruitment, review, and yield processes
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Willingness to receive feedback
  • Comfort with the ebb and flow of the admission cycle and an openness to non-standard work hours, especially during travel and yield seasons
  • A desire to collaborate with fellow professionals in meeting office goals


QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR ROLE
  • This position requires more than one year of experience in admission work in the high school, community-based organization or college setting.
  • A Bachelor's Degree is required

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR BOTH ROLES (appreciate, but not required)
  • Fluency in another language
  • Membership in regional and/or special interest groups
  • Familiarity with community-based organizations
