Responsibilities

The staff writer will join the fast-paced Office of Marketing & Communications and will become an integral part of the OCC team. The writer must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, enjoy conducting interviews and writing engaging content at rapid speed. Most stories will be short-form (approximately 400 words) requiring clear, concise, and compelling copy that captures the heart of the story quickly for the intended audience to enjoy. Our ideal candidate is comfortable with technology and will post approved stories to (MySMC, website, and social media), is flexible, exhibits a desire to learn, is able to meet or exceed deadlines, is familiar with working in a fast-paced environment, and exhibits collegiality.

1. Writer

Pitch new story ideas to the Marketing & Communications team at our weekly content/story meeting.

Researches, writes, and edits materials that are placed in the College's various marketing and communications publications and sites, including SMC's website, magazine, and digital newsletter.

Conduct interviews with students, staff, faculty and Saint Mary's Community and present themselves as a representative of Saint Mary's and its mission.

Complete and publish 2-3 new stories each week (approximately 400 words) that are clear, concise, and compelling copy- Update the content/story calendar with story links.

Provides a critical eye for all communications materials, proofreading and ensuring that materials fit within Saint Mary's style, according to the Editorial Style Guide.

Proofreading collateral materials from other departments that Marketing & Communications is managing.-Contributing content to the Marketing & Communications' project management system.

Meet or exceed all deadlines.

2. Web/Social Media Support.

Update website via Salli.

Proof-reading and copyediting.

Post approved stories to (MySMC, website, and social media).

Posting and/or monitoring social media.

Serve as member and contribute to the enrollment email marketing committee.

Other Duties as Assigned

- Available to jump in and help the Marketing & Communications team when needed- Attend weekly 1:1 meetings with the Chief Marketing & Communications Officer

Experience and Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Eduction: REQUIRED: BA in English, Journalism, or related field

Experience:

Skills/Abilities:

Excellent writing skills

Ability to generate new content (story creation, website, social media) at rapid speed

Fact-checking and content accuracy a must

Familiarity with Microsoft Suite, Google Suite and MailChimp or a willingness to learn

Working knowledge of graphic design (knowledge of Canva, Adobe Illustrator) or willingness to learn

Communications and marketing knowledge a plus

Willing to receive training and feedback
