Position Summary:
The Associate Director works independently and in tandem with the Director and other members of the Office of Grants and Sponsored Programs to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward federal, private foundation, and corporate funding opportunities that support faculty research and development, institutional priorities, and other sponsored activities. The Associate Director researches funding opportunities, writes and edits proposals of varying levels of complexity, manages and creates correspondence for senior administrators, develops and/or analyzes budgets, and facilitates appropriate approvals. The Associate Director independently engages administrators, deans, department chairs, directors, faculty, and key staff members in implementing initiatives that garner support for Middlebury College, and serves as OGSP liaison with functional areas as assigned.

This position may be considered for hybrid or fully remote work locations.

Essential Functions:
  • Develops and manages relationships with internal and external constituents for the purpose of aligning the college’s priorities for current and future initiatives with potential funding opportunities.
  • Identifies funding opportunities, strategizes, and writes highly impactful institutional grant proposals and stewardship reports both independently and in conjunction with administration, faculty, staff, and student project teams.
  • Collaborates with OGSP staff and others to advise and assist Faculty members with the Leave Program, Sponsored Research, and other initiatives.
  • Assists faculty members by editing proposals, helping prepare grant budgets, ensuring compliance with all college and sponsor requirements, and facilitating proposal approvals and submission, database systems, and award tracking.
  • Develops and collaborates in providing training workshops on multiple topics in grantsmanship, such as particular funding opportunities or proposal writing.
  • Develops narrative and financial materials to describe the potential, impact, and needs of Middlebury College’s priorities.
  • The individual will be expert in writing, editing, and researching content to develop priority cases for support in areas for which they serve as the OGSP liaison.
  • Leads or participates in special projects as needed to advance the mission and effectiveness of the Grants and Sponsored Programs Office and the College.


General Responsibilities:
  • Researches and analyzes a variety of reference materials in order to compile, evaluate, and disseminate data relative to a particular funder or initiative.
  • Manages multiple, complex tasks and relationships with initiative and independence.
  • Exercises sound judgment, prioritizes, and manages time effectively, while working effectively under pressure.
  • Acts as a team player by working collaboratively and demonstrating initiative, creativity, sound judgment, discretion, and leadership.
  • As needed, plans, organizes and hosts foundation site visits.
  • Handles confidential information and materials in a discreet manner.
  • Periodically works extended hours, including weekends, in order to meet deadlines.
  • Travel as needed to support the cultivation/stewardship of funders and/or participate in professional development activities.


Qualifications
Education:

BA/BS required. Graduate degree preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of fundraising techniques and strategies
  • Knowledge of academic programs at liberal arts institutions is essential.
  • Excellent analytical, research, written, and oral communications skills
  • Ability to interact professionally and comfortably with senior administrators, faculty members, and external constituents.
  • Excellent computer skills, including knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite, internet research, and funding databases. Knowledge of InfoEd and Blackbaud a plus.


Experience:
5+ years of experience in Corporate and Foundation Relations or related fundraising/grant writing work in an academic, corporate, or non-profit setting.
