Job Description Summary

The Vice President of Development (“VP”) is a key member of the University Advancement (“UA”) senior leadership team and reports directly to the Executive Vice President and Chief Advancement Officer (“EVP/CAO”). In collaboration with the EVP / CAO, the President, Provost, and Deans, the VP leads fundraising and development activity throughout Chapman University and acts as campaign director, developing priorities and strategic plans to achieve funding goals for Chapman’s comprehensive campaign and in support of its Strategic Plan.

A forward-thinking leader, this role will implement best practices and use a data-driven approach to enhance and elevate UA’s existing development programs. This role oversees the areas of Legacy Planning, Corporate Giving, Foundation Relations, Research, College and School Development, Institutional Support, Annual Giving, the Chapman Fund, and Campaign Communications and mentors and supervises staff in these areas.

An outstanding fundraiser, the VP builds lasting relationships with their portfolio of donors and prospects, leading to major and principal gifts to the University. The VP will set annual development goals in consultation with the EVP, and will collaborate extensively with other leaders in UA and across the University to optimize development and stewardship opportunities.

Responsibilities

Leadership; Comprehensive Campaign
  • Works closely with the EVP / CAO, the President, Provost, Deans, and UA leadership to attract new funding sources and achieve fundraising goals set pursuant to the Comprehensive Campaign, current Strategic Plan, and for other designated priorities.
  • In conjunction with the EVP / CAO and other senior leadership, develops clear, consistent, cohesive and compelling messaging around advancement that leverages the strengths and aspirations of Chapman University, increases excitement about the University’s trajectory, and results in philanthropic support for funding priorities.
  • In collaboration with the EVP / CAO, provides leadership as the Campaign Director of the Comprehensive Campaign, planning and launching the public phase and bringing the campaign to a successful completion. Sets benchmarks and tracks progress; adjusts strategies and tactics, as necessary, to meet the $500 Million for the campaign.
  • Assesses current development strategies and fundraising potential of the University and develops a strategic plan to enhance fundraising activity; implements solicitation strategies of the strategic plan that result in sustainable long-term growth in philanthropic contributions including growth in unrestricted, restricted, major gifts, capital, and endowment. Collaborates with Alumni Relations to increase alumni participation rates.
  • Develops and implements new and innovative plans to identify and acquire prospective individual and institutional donors, increase donor retention, and upgrade and renew existing donors.
  • Ensures the cultivation of prospective donors at all levels, including annual, mid-level, planned, major, principal, and transformational giving.
  • Ensures that development activities across the University are well coordinated and support both institutional and unit-specific priorities. Orchestrates the participation of the EVP / CAO, President, Provost, deans, faculty members, trustees, and volunteers in the joint cultivation and stewardship of key funding sources.
  • Together with UA leadership, develops and deploys a strategic, modern, and forward-thinking operating model that utilizes and is enabled by metrics, data analytics, and predictive modeling to build portfolios and inform fundraising strategies.
  • Oversees the preparation of written proposals and targeted marketing for Comprehensive Campaign, donor cultivation and stewardship.
  • Partners with the EVP / CAO, President, and board leadership in the identification, recruitment, and cultivation of new board members, identifying potential key leaders.
  • Advise the EVP / CAO on strategies and incentives to facilitate close collaboration among fundraisers and with the Advancement Services, Constituent Experience, and Engagement and Volunteerism teams to optimize fundraising opportunities. Collaborate with the Vice President of University Advancement to lead efforts to implement such strategies.

Personal Portfolio
  • Serves as front line qualification, cultivation, and solicitation officer to create opportunities for connecting constituents with Chapman University’s strategic funding priorities, including in the comprehensive campaign.
  • Personally cultivates, solicits, and stewards a select portfolio of up to 100 major and principal gift prospects. Leads the frontline fundraising team by example, demonstrating success.
  • Develops and implements prospect strategies tailored to prospects’ individual interests; develops sustaining relationships with prospects and donors and meets with individuals to target gifts.
  • Personally raises major and principal gifts at a level consistent with a principal gift officer, meeting individual fundraising goals.

Management and Administration
  • Leads, supports, and mentors a Development staff of more than 25 professionals, promoting a culture of excellence, collaboration, and professional growth.
  • Oversees Development personnel activities, including hiring, training, coaching, and performance assessment/feedback.
  • Sets clear direction, priorities, and well-defined/measurable goals for Development staff. Ensures that staff members execute effective prospect and donor management strategies that result in meaningful engagement and successful solicitation of gifts.
  • Fosters a work environment that recognizes and rewards performance, supports new ideas and innovation, builds confidence, encourages collaboration and teamwork, reduces silos, and retains staff.
  • Actively and meaningfully promotes a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. · Enhances professional development opportunities for staff.
  • Ensures staff are knowledgeable of and in compliance with all regulations and laws, policies, procedures, and ethical standards.
  • Supports the development team in becoming proficient in and using the tools available through UA’s CRM database, Affinaquest, and other applicable systems.
  • Oversees and administers budget and manages expenses for the Development team
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree, and a minimum of ten years’ progressively responsible fundraising experience. Leadership in a university advancement organization or other complex advancement organization required.
  • Depth of knowledge in all key areas of development, including designing, implementing, and closing a comprehensive campaign.
  • Experience managing a portfolio and personally securing major and principal gifts, as part of a comprehensive campaign.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience building upon an existing development program, resulting in a meaningful increase in philanthropic revenue for an organization. Success increasing the effectiveness of a development program and its staff through established objectives and performance standards.
  • Proven management skills in establishing a team and goal-oriented environment that empowers staff and fosters professional development and celebrates achievements. An approach to management that leads by example, bringing out the best in staff and yielding pride, ownership, and a sense of team effort. Experience successfully training and motivating frontline fundraising teams to meet annual fundraising goals.
  • Experience using data analytics and predictive modeling to build individual portfolios and inform fundraising practices.
  • Ability to build relationships with a wide range of constituents from diverse backgrounds. A strong commitment and sensitivity to fostering inclusive working and learning environments.
  • Significant experience with board development and working with board members and volunteers in the cultivation of prospects.
  • Ability to represent the University in a positive light, communicate persuasively and passionately to, and collaborate effectively with various internal and external constituencies.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to develop and maintain relationships, exercise diplomacy, and build partnerships.
  • Technical skills to learn and use Chapman’s CRM database and other systems.
  • Ability to create operational efficiencies and the best use of resources, including a demonstrated understanding of budgets and the ability to manage them.
  • Strong skills in financial analysis to provide reports and analysis to leadership and the Board of Trustees.
  • Ability to understand and consistently ensure compliance with University policies and procedures, state and federal rules and regulations, as well as high ethical standards.
  • Ability to travel locally to meet with prospects and donors in Southern California and to travel more extensively on occasion, as required.
  • Experience working effectively with deans, directors, academic and university leaders to achieve annual fund-raising goals.
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge and understanding of academic and research functions as well as operating principles of a private university.
  • Knowledge of Orange County and greater Southern California philanthropic and business communities.
