ASSISTANT DIRECTOR - ATHLETICS AND AQUATICS
MALCOLM X COLLEGE

Malcolm X College is looking for an Assistant Director of Athletics and Aquatics to join the team. Reporting to a Director, Intercollegiate & Intramural Athletics, the position of Assistant Director Athletics and Aquatics is responsible for the management and programming associated with a campus Aquatic Facility with an emphasis on providing a safe, well-maintained, and adequately staffed swimming pool and aquatic program environment that supports the instructional and wellness goals of the City Colleges of Chicago (CCC). Five CCC campus facilities have an Aquatic Center: Kennedy King, Olive-Harvey, Daley, Wright, and Malcolm X College.

The Assistant Director also works collaboratively with the Director in the development, implementation and administration of a comprehensive intercollegiate and intramural athletics programs. Provides leadership in maintaining an athletic program policy of education and graduating student athletes. Performs related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Assists the Director, Intercollegiate and Intramural Athletics in the implementation of the “Academics First Agenda” and implementation of a Department strategy designed to increase enrollment, retention and completion within an athletics program.
  • Manages the operations of the Aquatic Center and ensures the safety of swimming pool users by developing and implementing operating procedures and ensuring staff are properly trained on current safety and security procedures.
  • Conducts regular safety and maintenance inspections of pool and equipment to reduce hazards and to provide maximum safety to patrons.
  • Participates in the interviewing and hiring of Aquatic Center staff. Ensures Lifeguard and Water Safety Instruction staff maintain current certifications for lifeguard, Water Safety Instruction, CPR/AED, and first aid and keeps records on file.
  • Supervises aquatics staff including Lifeguards who ensure the safety of pool patrons and Swim Instructors who provide swimming instruction and other aquatic facility programming.
  • Approves time and attendance records, prepares work schedules and organizes training and in-service activities for staff.
  • Works in coordination with trained maintenance staff for pool testing and certification. Oversees the maintenance of daily records required to maintain compliance with public health standards and recertification requirements in relation to pool facility.
  • Works in cooperation with college administrators and faculty in scheduling credit and personal interest swimming classes. Manages pool schedule to ensure no scheduling conflicts; monitors scheduling of lifeguards to ensure adequate lifeguards on duty at all times pool is open; ensures certified instructors are assigned for swimming classes.
  • Responsible for daily checks and inventory of equipment and makes recommendations for the purchasing of new equipment to the Director of Intercollegiate and Intramural Athletics and the Executive Director of Business Services. Prepares operating budget for the Aquatics Center.
  • Maintains aquatic center activity and incident reports and presents data to management as required. Works with the Director of Risk Management to ensure compliance with safety protocol.
  • Works collaboratively with the Director to assure the college’s compliance with National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) rules and regulations.
  • Assists in organizing team travel and athletic event management. May attend NJCAA Regional meetings. Meets with conference and league officials on scheduling, post-season play, and related issues.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience
  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in physical education, recreation, sports administration or a related field.
  • Work experience in an aquatic and/or recreational sports setting supervising programs is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of lifeguard safety skills and water safety instruction.
  • Must be certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding; First Aid; Water Safety Instruction; and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) required
Knowledge, Skills and Ability
  • Knowledge in planning and organizing aquatics programs
  • Knowledge of swimming pool mechanical systems and the use of chemicals for swimming pool water
  • Knowledge of swimming programs offered through continuing education
  • Knowledge of industry standards for care and maintenance of public swimming pools
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
