Job Summary

The Herbst Program for Engineering, Ethics & Society in the College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for a full-time Instructor position in the Humanities. The University of Colorado Boulder is a dynamic community of scholars and learners situated on one of the most spectacular college campuses in the country. As one of 34 U.S. public institutions belonging to the prestigious Association of American Universities—and the only member in the Rocky Mountain region—CU Boulder has a proud tradition of academic excellence.
The University of Colorado Boulder is committed to building a culturally diverse community of faculty, staff, and students dedicated to contributing to an inclusive campus environment. We are an Equal Opportunity employer, including veterans and individuals with disabilities.

Who We Are

The Herbst Program for Engineering, Ethics & Society was founded in 1989 to offer Great Books seminars to CEAS undergraduates, thereby helping students develop critical thinking and communication skills. Text-based seminars remain the heart of the Program, with over 40 sections offered annually. Other courses capitalize on the expertise of Herbst faculty and serve specific needs in the CEAS curriculum. The faculty are the Program’s greatest asset, having earned multiple teaching awards and distinctions; launched the Engineering Honors Program and the Global Engineering Residential Academic Program; brought new vision to the Engineering Leadership Program; led study abroad courses in Xi’an, Rome, Vienna, and Madrid; supported international students at CU with ESL/ELL seminars and graduate workshops; and fostered a vibrant and supportive intellectual community.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Thirty years after its founding, the Herbst Program for Engineering, Ethics & Society remains committed to the Great Books tradition in the broad sense of the term. By exploring the human condition through world literatures, philosophy, and other humanistic texts, its faculty aim to create a life-long love of the humanities in their CEAS students—most of whom take only one Herbst course. The ideal candidate, therefore, will embrace the opportunity to teach beyond his or her discipline, adapt multiple humanistic disciplines to the task of engaging a diverse body of STEM students, and demonstrate intellectual acuity and lively imagination in fields that can fruitfully enrich the Program. This non-tenure-track appointment (90% teaching and 10% service) will have a three-year renewable contract (nine months per year). It requires teaching six undergraduate discussion seminars per academic year, and it will start in August 2022.
