About the Department/Unit

As a student-centered research university, AU is committed to advancing knowledge and preparing the next generation of leaders to effect positive change in our community and throughout the world. Our challenging academic programs, expert faculty and staff, and vibrant campus in the nation’s capital provide students with enriching educational experiences at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Launched in 2022, the SRI program mobilizes university-wide research efforts that require a holistic, cross-disciplinary approach through two-year initiatives and funding to harness and amplify the collective strength of existing research institutes, centers, and laboratories; academic programs; individual investigators; graduate and undergraduate students; and university partners.

Summary/Objective

Reporting to the Vice Provost for Research and working in collaboration with the Special Assistant for Strategic Initiatives, the project manager will coordinate the launch and administration of American University’s Strategic Research Initiative (SRI) program. The SRI Project Manager is responsible for managing the daily the operations of the SRI program and assisting faculty leaders with the administrative and communication needs of each Initiative.

Essential Functions

Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for the SRI program with internal and external stakeholders
  • Provide administrative and operational support to 2-3 SRI faculty directors and SRI participants
  • Support fundraising activities including grant proposal development to both federal and non-federal sponsors, and with potential philanthropic donors
  • Design, support, and manage SRI program communications; including websites, newsletters, email communications, and social media in collaboration with other staff members
  • Coordinate events; including booking rooms, drafting agendas and other event materials, and assisting with speaker and audience outreach
  • Maintain SRI program records to support project progress reports and tracking of SRI key performance indicators (KPIs)
  • Assist with the preparation of SRI reports and other project documents
Supervisory Responsibility
  • Responsible for managing the daily the operations of the SRI program and assisting faculty leaders with the administrative and communication needs of each Initiative.
Required Education and Experience
  • Must possess a full complement of project management skills and be able to assist project leaders advance from inception to completion.
  • The incumbent will need to exhibit flexibility, adaptability, and creativity.
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team, and be responsive to both executive and operational needs.
  • Must be comfortable working with researchers from all fields including but not limited to STEM, the social sciences, arts, and education.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Familiarity with fundraising either through supporting grant proposal development or philanthropic relationships is preferred.
