Department Summary
The Erb Memorial Union (EMU) is a department of the Division of Student Life. The EMU is a multifaceted auxiliary service that employs over 90 professional staff and 400 student staff, and serves over 15 thousand daily users during the academic year. The EMU welcomes students, faculty, staff, the community, and visitors to campus, and its mission is to provide learning experiences and opportunities for personal growth in an open, inclusive, and resource-rich community where students and staff collaborate to inspire and sustain extraordinary programs and services that promote diversity and social interaction. The EMU is student-centered and is operated in collaboration with a student Board, who are actively involved in determining the character and scope of the department and approve the budget recommendations of all EMU services and programs.

The Core Mission of the Outdoor Program (OP) is: “To inspire learning through student-powered outdoor adventure.” Acting as a wilderness resource center, the program assists students with off-campus trips; environmental projects and research; environmental and outdoor recreation career development; outdoor equipment selection; and safety education. The program also provides employment opportunities for students. The five main operations of the program include cooperative adventure trips, OP Outings, on-campus events and clinics, gear rentals, bike program, and an information resource center.

Students participating in OP activities develop in ways beyond outdoor skill development, which are valuable in academic, career, and personal life; these skills include decision-making and leadership skills, time management skills, environmental awareness, social maturity and confidence, healthy lifestyles and stress reduction, respect for cultural diversity, ability to work with others, and more.
Position Summary
The Assistant Outdoor Program Director of Operations (ADO) is a full-time position that provides oversight and leadership in the daily operation of the Rental facility, including student staff hiring, training, and evaluating, as well as vehicle, trailer, and outdoor equipment purchasing, maintenance, and repair. This position provides support to program staff, facilitates events, outings, and trip logistics, and assists with the planning and implementation of the program overall.

In addition to assisting in the daily operation and staff oversight of the Outdoor Program, the ADO has full purchasing authority. The ADO reports to the OP Director, and in the Director's absence, this position, if designated, assumes those duties, including after hour emergency response duties. The Assistant Director of Operations is responsible for reviewing, updating, and following all Risk Management policies and procedures as they may relate to the job. This position serves as an advocate for student development and mentorship.
