  This pool is intended for AY 22-23. Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis, and screening of applications will take place as positions become available and continue until positions are filled. The Department of English and the University of Oregon anticipate ongoing uncertainty created by the COVID-19 pandemic about student enrollment figures. While the Department of English expects Pro Tem teaching appointments to be for in-person classes for AY 22-23, the timing of hiring, course assignment, and modality decisions may come later than in years past.

  Department Summary
  The English Department is one of the largest academic departments at the University of Oregon; it is by itself larger than many of the professional schools on campus. The Department also houses and supports various smaller programs, such as the Center for Teaching Writing; Comics and Cartoon Studies; Disabilities Studies; Digital Humanities; the Writing, Public Speaking, and Critical Reasoning Minor; the Folklore Program; and other special programs or projects within the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS). In addition, the Department offers first-year Composition Courses that are required of almost all University undergraduates and enroll 7,000 students a year. The Department has approximately 400 undergraduate and 70 graduate majors. Adding the Composition Course enrollments to its major programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, the average annual enrollment in the English Department courses is about 12,000 students.

  Position Summary
  The appointee will have teaching and service duties related to teaching in the department of English. Teaching will be primarily at the undergraduate level but may involve assignment at the graduate level. The full-time course load is nine courses per year, three per term. Instructional needs would most likely be in lower-division argumentative writing. We may have occasional needs in film and media, lower-division literature courses (Introduction to Drama, Poetry, or Fiction, Shakespeare, British or American surveys), and folklore. Advising students in office hours, and participating in program assessment as part of teaching duties, are expectations of the appointments. Pro Tem faculty are not required but are welcome to participate in departmental service. Positions are for one year or less, with the possibility of renewal for up to three years based on need and performance.
  Minimum Requirements
  Applicants must have demonstrated successful college-level teaching experience appropriate to our needs and to our existing programs, AND
  
  To teach argumentative writing courses:
  
• M.A. in English or a closely related field
  
  To teach literature courses:
  
• Ph.D. in English or a closely related field
  Professional Competencies
  
• Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds
  Preferred Qualifications
  
• Training and experience teaching argumentative writing
