Job Summary:

The Center for Human Genomics and Precision Medicine (CHGPM) at the School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH), focuses its research activities on applied genomics and personalized medicine which encompasses basic, translational, and clinical research. CHGPM is setting up a new Precision Medicine Research Service (PMRS), to develop widely utilized laboratory and computational pipelines for human genomics and precision medicine researchers.

To support initiation, management, and operation of this service, we are looking for a Research Specialist. The incumbent will be ambitious and highly motivated to support research activities in our PMRS in the development of laboratory genomics workflows, utilizing resources available within CHGPM and through our partnership with the Biotechnology Center (for example, custom amplicon sequencing for recurrent genetic polymorphisms and mutations).

The Research Specialist will interact closely with faculty and staff within SMPH interested in using such services, and facilitate, execute, and manage client projects. They will further partner with a Bioinformatics Researcher to develop and implement computational pipelines to aid data analysis and interpretation. Responsibilities:

Develops, designs, and conducts one or more research projects and organizes daily operation of projects and specialized research areas to ensure work meets established objectives under moderate supervision.
  • 20% Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results
  • 20% Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders
  • 20% Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
  • 20% Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials
  • 10% Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers
  • 10% Performs literature reviews and writes reports

Education:

Preferred
Bachelor's Degree
Preferred in the areas of Genomics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or related discipline.

Qualifications:

Required:
- 1-3 years of work or training experience in a genomics or molecular biology laboratory
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office or similar suite, comfortable working with software associated with biomedical and automation instruments
- Proficiency and understanding of molecular biology techniques

Preferred:
- Knowledge and experience with laboratory methods in genomics, next-generation sequencing workflows, or molecular biology
- Experience in supporting interpretation of results from sequencing experiments
- Knowhow and experience in analysis of genomics data and results
- Track record of project and laboratory management
- Interest in using automated laboratory equipment

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who can function with minimal supervision.
