Technology Support Specialist



The Technology Support Specialist assists and supports the students, faculty and staff in using technology within the academic process and assesses the usability and viability of potential systems and how these systems will interact with current University technology.

This individual, reporting to the Director of Academic and Campus Technologies, working under the Helpdesk services manager, will keep up to date on trends and innovation in learning technologies that could enhance and improve the school learning experience and student learning outcomes. This ATS advises on resources available in the learning technology industry and provides suggestions to stakeholders within academic programs on the best technology to achieve specific tasks.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Provide Tier 2 technical support to students, faculty, and staff in using academic technologies to enable teaching and learning including Canvas, Panopto, Respondus, and Zoom
  • Act as a liaison between Faculty and Information Technology support
  • Design, present, and publish training and support resources, workshops, orientations, and courses to faculty and students
  • Researches, analyzes, and validates learning technology that will be used in the design and support of programs, ensuring alignment to UB strategy
  • Partners with stakeholders, including Information Technology, Office of Sponsored Research and Institutional Research departments, to gather learning technology needs and determine integration standards
  • Participates in Information Technology meetings as needed to stay current with infrastructure changes, policies and procedures
  • Gathers requirements from stakeholders to understand learning technology needs
  • Evaluates and recommends learning technology that advances the student experience and aligns to US
  • strategy and program goals
  • Partners with cross-functional stakeholders to create a consistent, seamless, and effective learning experience for students
  • Assists Audio Visual Staff with technology and events
  • Other Duties as may be assigned.
Qualifications
  • Associates degree required, Bachelor's degree in computing or a related field preferred
  • Experience using new technologies to deliver or supplement teaching and learning
  • Understands learning science, theories, and principles and how they relate to instructional design and student learning outcomes
  • Experience developing and delivering training workshops or training packages.
  • Excellent oral, written, and instructional communication skills are required to work effectively within a team- oriented environment and with multi-disciplinary faculty with varying levels of instructional technology skills
  • Knowledge of best practices in instructional technologies
  • Experience in providing technical support in a higher education environment
  • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at different stages while meeting deadlines and quality standards
  • Ability to work independently, under minimal supervision
  • Ability to facilitate collaboration, support, and approval from a variety of stakeholders
  • Outstanding customer service skills and the ability to create immediate rapport with a wide variety of constituents.
  • Ability to maintain University processes, requirements, deadlines, etc.
  • Ability to evaluate learning technology
  • Understanding of basic networking technology and Ethernet communication, hardware and software configuration of printers, PC workstations, laptops, tablets and other similar peripheral equipment.
  • Flexible hours required, some nights and weekends.
