SFCC is one of two accredited community colleges that comprise the Community Colleges of Spokane (CCS). In addition to serving the urban and suburban population in greater Spokane, including students from Fairchild Airforce Base, CCS provides educational services to rural communities throughout our 12,302 square-mile region in Eastern Washington, including students from the Spokane and other Eastern Washington tribes.  

Serving about 8,200 students, SFCC endeavors to be an educational leader and a responsive partner with the community and region to provide access to relevant programs of the highest quality. We offer a large liberal arts/transfer program (approximately 75% of total enrollment) as well as state-of-the-art professional technical programs (about 25%). DESCRIPTION

The Human Services department housed in the Social Science, Business, and Human Services (SSBHS) division at Spokane Falls Community College (SFCC) is seeking a Full-Time Tenure Track Instructor of ASL/ITP. We seek applicants with a strong commitment to our students, diversity and global awareness, the ability to motivate and educate in an engaging and professional manner. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Prepares for and instructs, through traditional classroom, hybrid, online synchronous and asynchronous modes, professional technical and American Sign Language classes in the discipline of Interpreter Training; Assignments may be at off-campus centers and may also include evening and/or weekend classes, workshops, or events.    
  • Provides availability and accessibility to current and potential students for purpose of academic advising/consulting and support, in a manner appropriate to meet student needs, through a combination of scheduled office hours, e-mail accessibility or other effective means of responsive and timely communication.
  • Communicates expectations and establishes clear grading criteria through appropriate instructional means, to include but not limited to developing course syllabi, handouts, workbooks, online video and audio materials supporting the instructional process; evaluates student progress and provides clear, timely feedback. 
  • Builds and maintains connections in the community that facilitate student placement in applied interpreting experience (practicum) sites and support the program's advisory committee.
  • Communicates with receiving transfer institutions in support of successful transitions for SFCC students. 
  • Participates in district, division, department, or general faculty meetings; in-service training; curriculum development; academic consulting; workshops or seminars; service on district or college councils or committees, or other activities within the scope of the position. 
  • Complies with state and federal law applicable to professional duties and responsibilities; Follows established procedures in areas such as printing, turning in grades, bookstore orders, office support, student financial aid requirements, safety and health issues and related administrative processes.  
  • Support and advance the CCS strategic plan, and perform other duties as assigned. 
  • In addition, faculty may: 
    • Instruct courses in related disciplines based upon individual qualifications and expertise.  
    • Direct the work of assigned work-study students and Instructional Technicians.  
    • Advise student clubs or associations.
 

COMPETENCIES & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (Minimum Qualifications)

  • An earned bachelors degree from an accredited institution, and an earned associate's degree in interpreting from an accredited institution
    • The following can be substituted for the earned associates degree in interpreting:
      • Certificate of completion in Interpreting,
      • OR the ability to demonstrate competency in ASL at a level comparable to an Associate's degree,
      • OR Deaf culture and American Sign Language native
  • Demonstrable knowledge of Deaf culture and ability to engage effectively with and support the Deaf community.
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills and demonstrable ability to work as a team and independently as needed.
  • Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Acceptance of the responsibility to promote the welfare and best interests of students at all times. 
  • Acceptance of and willingness to support the role that community colleges serve in higher education, and specifically the mission, values, goals and objectives of the Community Colleges of Spokane. 
  • Ability to perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and goals of the institution and the community/technical college system. 
  • A demonstrated understanding of and value for the contributions that a diverse workforce can make to the success of both the organization and the students we serve.

PREFERRED COMPETENCIES (Desirable Qualifications)

The following qualifications are not necessary for application but could support a candidate’s success:

  • Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) or Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), including CDI certification(s), or National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Certification Level 4 or above.
  • An earned Master's degree from an accredited institution. 
  • Two or more years of college level teaching experience in an Interpreter Training Program. 
  • Two or more years of experience in online teaching, or any other distance learning platforms. 
  • Evidence of understanding of the Transliteration and Interpretation processes and modalities. 
  • Ability to network with local, regional, and/or national agencies and educational institutions which serve deaf and hard of hearing students. 
  • One cumulative academic year experience with mentoring individuals in ASL and/or interpreting either in groups or one-on-one situations. 
  • Two or more years of curriculum writing and development for ASL, Interpreting, or Transliterating.
  • Hold a national level certification such as the National Interpreter Certification (NIC) or hold another recognized certification/assessment, or be a native signer.
 

CONDITIONS/TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a full-time, tenure track position with an entry level base salary (for a 175-day academic year contract) of $55,916 - $59,069 / year. Future advancement in base salary is based upon a combination of years of service accrued at our college and professional development activity.

Annual salary is comprised of base salary plus any combination of academic year overload contracts, summer effort contracts, project stipends, student club advising stipends, and/or department chair /program lead faculty stipends consistent with the provisions of the current collective bargaining agreement between CCS and the Association for Higher Education (AHE).

TOTAL COMPENSATION$71,901 - $75,336.

 Total compensation is an estimate based upon adding the following amounts together:

  • Base compensation, plus
  • Current employer-paid health and related benefit contribution rates, plus
  • Median retirement fund contributions. 

The actual total will vary depending upon each employee's enrollment choices.

CCS reserves the right to cancel this recruitment without notice.  Union membership is no longer a condition of employment although this position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement.  Anticipated date of employment is Fall 2022.

CONDITIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT

Person hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of U.S. Citizenship or lawful authorization to work in the United States. This is an absolute condition of employment.
