Job Description

The Assistant Director for Student Programs is responsible for developing high impact academic, professional, and personal support programs for multiple groups of students at all academic levels in the College of Engineering. This includes, for example, student recipients of the Clark Scholarship, the NACME Scholarship, the Accelerated Masters Program, the VT-NETS scholarship students, and other scholarship programs as well as the STEP Summer Bridge students. Additionally, this position will be responsible for the implementation of the Student Transition to Engineering (STEP) Summer Bridge Program. The Assistant Director will create and maintain systems to ensure that student participants are seamlessly connected to the CEED office and other student service offices to support retention and graduation rates. The Assistant Director is responsible for the programmatic and operational management of the student support activities for these and other specific groups of students and is accountable for the participant’s success.
This position reports to the Associate Dean for Equity and Engagement and requires a highly motivated individual with the ability to deliver a high level of interactive customer service, develop and maintain collaborative relationships within the College and University environment. The Assistant Director for Student Programs must be able to work independently with limited supervision.

Responsibilities and Duties:
●Coordinates services for student participants during the academic year including, but not limited to: tutoring, academic coaching, disability and career services, peer mentoring, personal counseling services, and cultural enrichment activities. Develops and refines methods for continuous monitoring of participant progress, as well as timely follow-up.
●Effectively implements the STEP Summer Bridge Program. This includes all planning activities including instructor and student staff hiring, scheduling and logistics and oversight of the five-week summer program
●Effectively manages the student support program budget(s), monitors and reviews expenditures monthly, and prepares a detailed annual budget.
●Assists in identifying and selecting participants, assessing students, developing individual action plans as necessary, assigning services, monitoring participants' progress, retaining and graduating students.
●Oversees and assists with the maintenance and monitoring of recordkeeping to ensure an efficient system that facilitates program planning and evaluation and tracking of services to students.
●Strictly honors student confidentiality and exhibits sensitivity toward program participants.
●Conducts research and planning necessary to facilitate program evaluation and reporting. Oversees and assists with the evaluation process
●Actively participates in college and university-related committees, providing service to, and/or representing the College as required.
●Provides and promotes service excellence through courteous, informed, accessible and professional engagement.
●Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

A Master’s degree in Engineering, Education, Counseling, Student Personnel Services or a relevant field is required. Experience with the design, implementation, coordination or management of services or retention within the secondary/post-secondary level is also required. The successful candidate will also possess excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, as well as proficiency in using social media and other electronic methods of communication. Familiarity with the Microsoft Suite of Office Applications. This position must work well with students, faculty and staff at all levels within a diverse, multi-cultural, collaborative environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience in student support programs or experience with programs designed to support student development. Also a strong understanding of student development theory, student engagement literature, and high impact practices.
