Position Purpose

To participate as part of a decision making team (coaching staff) under the direction of the head coach in planning, coaching, recruiting, administering, and promoting the basketball program within NCAA, Ivy League, and institutional standards. The Assistant Coach plays a critical role in achieving the overall goals of the basketball program by providing important recommendations, suggestions and decisions regarding game strategies, line-ups, priority listing of recruits, etc. as well as offering initiative and independent judgment (e.g., in providing coaching instruction, evaluating and communicating with prospective recruits and their parents, and representing the basketball program to constituents).

Bachelors plus 6 or more years' experience or combination of education and experience

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Strong knowledge of Basketball skills and strategies in one or more areas (e.g., offense, defense, etc.). Good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of people in a diverse community. Strong organizational skills. Ability to recruit effectively with no athletic grants and highly selective admissions standards.

Coaching/Mentoring
Contributes to planning and implementing the training, conditioning and coaching programs for the Women’s Basketball team. Assists head coach in conducting team practices, training, conditioning, and competitions. Prepares scouting reports and game plans for opponents. Teaches basketball skills to student-athletes. Demonstrates a sincere interest in the academic, personal, and physical welfare of each student-athlete; counsel team members and consult with the head coach and appropriate College staff as necessary for the resolution of issues.

Recruiting
Assists head coach in developing and implementing an overall recruiting plan, including, but not limited to: identifying qualified students and talented athletes; communicating with prospects by phone, mail, e-mail; traveling to evaluate prospects, meet parents and high school coaches: organizing and participating in visits to campus by prospects, and maintaining appropriate recruiting records as required by the NCAA . Maintains knowledge of the College’s programs and opportunities to effectively inform prospects.

Administration
Knows and complies with the rules and regulations of the NCAA and Ivy League, and work to stay abreast of rule changes, applications and interpretations; actively seek to ensure that athletes and athletics representatives are informed of and comply with NCAA and Ivy League rules. Assists the head coach in planning and administering the budget for the Women’s Basketball program which includes assessing needs for equipment, team travel, recruiting, etc. Plans and reconciles recruiting travel expenses. Assists head coach in planning and developing competitive schedule. Assists head coach in coordinating team travel. Assists the head coach in keeping alumni, parents and supporters informed of the program’s status through newsletters, brochures, talks, etc.

Other
Assists head coach in promoting Dartmouth and the Women’s Basketball program through camps, clinics, and community involvement. Develops and maintain positive relationships with a wide range of constituents, including students, parents, faculty, department and College staff, alumni, fans, community members, the media, etc. Represents Dartmouth, the athletic department, and the Women’s Basketball program in an exemplary fashion.
