Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the Job
The Department of English at Sam Houston State University seeks applications for an Assistant Professor in Technical and Professional Communication. This 9-month, tenure-track position starts with the Fall 2018 semester and requires the following:

The chosen candidate will teach three courses per semester and support SHSU's emerging program in Technical Communication. Activities will include:
• Teaching the technical-writing service course, which is required by more than 20 majors on campus.
• Teaching advanced courses in design, style, and editing for students minoring in Technical Communication.
• Helping develop SHSU's proposed online Master of Arts in Technical Communication.
• Cultivating and maintaining a research agenda.
• Supporting the Department, College, and University through service.

Faculty in Technical Communication teach in computer-based classrooms and have access to Iris, our Technical-Communication Suite. This creative space provides faculty and students with industry-standard technologies in audio, video, print, and digital document production.

Educational Requirements for the Position
An earned Ph.D. in Technical Communication, Professional Writing, Rhetoric, or related field by August 22, 2018.

Experience Required for the Position
• Experience teaching (as the instructor of record) college-level courses in Technical Communication.
• Evidence of excellent writing and communication skills.
• Evidence of an active research agenda.

Other Requirements for the Position
In addition to the above requirements, desirable candidates will have these experiences:
• Working professionally as a technical communicator (industry/consulting).
• Teaching Technical Communication in an online setting.
