Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Honors College at UNCW is seeking a Visiting Academic Advisor to join a growing interdisciplinary College community to begin as soon as possible. This is a one year fixed-term contract.

The Visiting Academic Advisor will provide support in the following areas:

Advising:
Holistically serves as an academic advisor supporting a diverse caseload of students from every major on campus; advises and assists students in making decisions about Honors coursework, general education curriculum, and course selection appropriate to the student’s academic goals; assist students in declaring major/pre-major; maintains advising files; offers academic advising in the Honors College office, through discussions over coffee/meals and meetings around campus; promotes study abroad/away, undergraduate research and fellowship applications.

Honors Culture and Programming:
Serves as an Honors advising liaison to academic departments; collaborates with colleagues across campus in other offices, including but not limited to Registrar, Housing, Academic Departments, Career Services, Center for the Support of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships; takes a holistic approach to students, advising them on resources beyond the classroom; Orientation and Professional Development activities; supports Living Learning Community programming and other sponsored activities and programs.

Retention and Completion:
Monitors student academic progress; supports students during academic and personal difficulty and makes appropriate referrals as needed; identifies problems requiring intervention; assists with strategies for academic recovery, and supports programmatic needs; focuses on retention by working on a sophomore and junior experience and programming; Central to this role it the ability to establish a strong relationship with students through a personable and accessible approach and the ability to demonstrate the importance of being “more than your major” through interdisciplinary inquiry. The Visiting Advisor will also be expected to support student programming and admissions activities conducted by other staff members.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Master’s Degree and 1 year of experience in a similar higher education environment, OR a Bachelor’s degree and two years of experience in an Honors College/Program environment will be considered on an exceptional basis.
  • Ability to communicate with students across a range of disciplinary interests within a broad liberal arts and interdisciplinary curriculum.
  • Experience with multicultural/diverse student backgrounds.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Experience advising Honors students through curricular issues, programming, thesis support, co-curricular programming and experiences.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The UNCW Honors College offers student-centered seminars to high ability undergraduates. Honors courses are characterized by student-lead discussions, creative research projects, deep readings, and applied knowledge. We are particularly interested in individuals who can help promote an interdisciplinary and experiential learning environment. Applicants should be invested in developing students “beyond their majors.”
