Job Description

Missouri Western State University seeks highly qualified candidates to serve as Assistant Director of Bands & Director of Athletic Bands . This is a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will have an extensive and successful background as a performer and teacher, will be able to work effectively with faculty colleagues, and will be able to recruit and inspire undergraduate students in a professionally-oriented educational environment. Salary is competitive and dependent on qualifications and experience. This successful candidate will work in tandem with the Director of Bands & Instrumental Studies in all aspects of a comprehensive collegiate band program to promote the music area in the School of Fine Arts with specific considerations toward recruiting and service to the institution. As with all faculty positions, high quality teaching, professional growth, and contributions to the profession are expected and well supported.

Assistant or Associate Professors are scholars that are experts in their field that teach college classes and can be defined as tenure-track or tenured faculty. They are responsible to educate students, engage in original research and creative activities that are published or presented in peer-reviewed settings.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES :
  • Studio teaching of applied instrumental music to music majors and non-music majors
  • Teaching a variety of music courses as assigned by the department chairperson
  • Directing the marching band, basketball pep band, organizing the annual Tournament of Champions marching competition, and Homecoming/Parade Band events
  • Building, recruiting and teaching athletic bands.
  • Service on School of Fine Arts and University committees
  • Participation in SFA meetings, recital hearings, juries, auditions, and recruitment activities is expected
  • Teaching: teach undergraduate and graduate students in a specific field of expertise; participation in programs that promote instructional development in the discipline; develop and manage curricular materials, ensuring that they meet departmental and university standards; participation in campus initiatives related to teaching such as learning communities, honors programs, and applied learning.
  • Scholarship: engage in scholarly and creative activities leading to peer-reviewed artifacts, performances, and/or exhibitions including basic research or creative expression, reviews and/or integrates prior research, applies current knowledge and innovations to important practices, and focuses on the nature and improvement of teaching.
  • Service: document students’ attendance, participation, and academic progress by giving and grading assignments, projects, quizzes and/or examinations that lead to a final grade; plan and create lectures, in-class activities, and assignments; maintain currency in one’s area of expertise and discipline; provide academic advising and support related to the academic progress of students; is accessible to students outside the classroom, providing ample periods of time for counseling and mentoring students in matters related to academic success; engage in service activities in support of departmental, college, and university needs; service supporting community outreach; and service to relevant professional organizations; participate in student recruitment efforts as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Artist/teacher with a growing or established national/international reputation as a performer and demonstrated evidence of successful teaching and recruitment.
  • Interest in building partnerships across campus and with local schools and communities
  • Appropriate scholarship including publications, conferences, presentations, and/or panels
  • Ability to use instructional technologies in support of student learning and professional collaboration
  • Ability to analyze data to inform teaching and program improvement
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction
  • Excellent teaching skills with an ability to coordinate with the faculties and students from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to multitask
  • Ability to engage large groups of people with complicated material
  • Able to teach with appropriate real-world experience
  • Able to demonstrate confidence teaching and presenting in a public forum
  • Technologically adept: can utilize electronic communications, online learning management systems, and other forms of technology related to the position
  • Passionate about specific academic fields and education in general
  • Clearly understands curriculum design, pedagogy, and learning outcomes assessment
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.
Required Qualifications

Terminal degree in music required

Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD
  • Percussion as primary instrument
  • Drill writing experience
  • Experience composing and/or arranging music for athletic bands
  • Experience in show design
  • Experience, training, and/or certification in working with students with exceptional abilities
  • Experience teaching in face to face and virtual settings
  • Experience leading undergraduate capstone experiences
  • Experience teaching Music History and/or Music Appreciation at the undergraduate level
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-bias in education, and a knowledge and interest in how they relate to academic music curricula
