Brief Description of Duties

The Case Manager will be a leader in the University’s efforts to strengthen student persistence and completion by increasing students’ awareness of and satisfaction with the availability and accessibility of resources and supports. The Case Manager develops and implements a case management system providing significant evaluation, intervention, education, outreach, and referral support to students of concern or in distress. The Case Manager collaborates extensively with partners on and off-campus to coordinate wrap-around services that address issues including food insecurity, the experience of homelessness, psychological health, physical health, crime victimization, relationship violence issues, sexual assault, and social adjustment. The Case Manager Reports to the Associate Vice President and Dean of Students (Dean of Students).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Leads the development, implementation, and assessment of a case management model in support of students in need of assistance in areas such as (but not limited to) referral for medical and mental health/addiction services, housing, transportation, food insecurity, childcare, and other basic needs.
  • Provides student consultation, implements appropriate interventions, coordinates student referrals to campus and community-based resources, and monitors the follow-up and progress of students.
  • Identifies emerging concerns, trends, and issues for current students and adjusts student outreach based on student history and overarching campus culture shifts.
  • Coordinates and collaborates with on-campus offices and academic units to identify students in need of services and provide a comprehensive network of support for students in need.
  • Develops and maintains in-depth knowledge of and builds strong working relationships with a diverse and broad range of government agencies, NGOs, non-profits, and individual providers to pursue financially and culturally appropriate and reliable sources of services for students. Develops a dynamic database of community and University resources and updates this resource frequently.
  • Works closely with the Dean of Students to provide leadership and facilitation to the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT); coordinates and tracks BIT referrals, develops action plans and consults with faculty, staff, and service providers to assure follow-up, intervention and continuity of care as needed. Develop and implement BIT training schedule and manage case management database.
  • Coordinates student crisis or emergency response from initial contact to resolution in consultation with Dean of Students. Creates policies and procedures related to students of concern or in distress, student crises or emergencies, basic needs support and the BIT.
  • Creates and implements training and initiatives that educate and inform the campus community (students, faculty, and staff) about case management services, BIT, campus, and community resources, increase awareness of psychosocial and economic barriers to academic success, and develop their capacity to support and refer students in need, and normalize help-seeking behaviors.
  • Develops program evaluation methods and leads the assessment of services provided by the office, BIT, and outside providers. Prepares reports to identify trends, assess effectiveness and progress toward goals and objectives, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Supervises students performing case management work in the Office of the Dean of Students in conjunction with experiential requirements (e.g., practicum, internship) of their academic programs. Plans, develops, oversees, and assesses trainees’ work in support of case management in the Dean of Students’ office, ensuring that tasks and activities are developmentally appropriate, ethical, and aligned with confidentiality law and best practices in higher education.
  • Serves on university committees related to the scope of the position’s responsibilities.
  • Travels to various UDC campus locations to provide student support.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
  • Master’s Degree in Social Work, or Counseling from an accredited institution.
  • Licensed Social Worker (LICSW) or Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the District of Columbia or the ability to obtain license within six months of employment.
  • Minimum three (3) years post-graduate degree experience in a human/social services position directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Knowledge and skills in community-based behavioral health care.
  • Direct experience engaging and serving diverse communities and individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience in crisis and case management in a human services context, including intake, needs assessment, screening, case documentation, and follow-up.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a 'satisfactory background investigation' is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia. The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
