Job Description

This position will be shared with the Swine Research Complex, National Swine Resource and Research Center and other pig projects in the Prather Laboratory to assist with maintaining animal welfare. Tasks will include feeding animals, cleaning animal areas, transporting animals within the farm, transporting animals from the farm to various delivery sites, maintaining vaccination schedule integrity, maintaining digital and physical records, farrowing assistance, piglet processing, estrus detection, artificial insemination, semen collection, surgical assistance, as well as other tasks related to promoting general animal welfare. This position will require working some weekends and other irregular hours as necessary.

15% Prepare written reports on progress of the various research projects in the lab. Keep records and documentation to track genetically modified swine mating and dispositions.

15% Assist with making genetic modifications to cells. Isolate DNA from pigs. Collect other samples from the pigs both dead and alive (e.g. blood, feces, tissue, etc.). Freeze both semen and fibroblast cells from genetically modified swine.

20% Care for newborn animals produced in the laboratory. Interact with on- and off- campus researchers who collaborate with the Prather laboratory. This will include coordination of the care and distribution of genetically modified swine and parts thereof.

25% Coordination and supervision of undergraduate workers, and coordination with other Research Specialist, Sr. Research Specialists, Graduate Students and PhD Scientists, and interact with the Office of Animal Resources and Animal Care and Quality Assurance.

25% Coordinate the care of the genetically engineered and wild type pigs in the Prather laboratory and assist with daily chores as needed. Interact with personnel from the Animal Science Research Center and the Swine Research Complex, the Annex buildings at the Beef Farm, the National Swine Resource and Research Center, and possibly other facilities on campus that house pigs (Middlebush, ARC, etc.) to facilitate animal movement and procedures such as surgery.

Salary

Salary commensurate with education and experience.

Salary: $15.29 - $26.11/ hour

Grade: GGS-007

Monday-Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience and at least 1 year of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.
