If so, then you are encouraged to apply for the position of Summer Lab Science Teacher with TRIO Upward Bound at the University of Southern Maine.

TRIO Upward Bound empowers first-generation, income-eligible high school students to explore and achieve their academic, career, financial, and personal goals. We are looking for dedicated, student-focused summer staff who have experience with and/or appreciation for the challenges faced by TRIO students. The Summer Guide works with the TRIO team and other Upward Bound staff at USM to implement the virtual and in-person components of the summer program. Program objectives include assisting students at various high schools throughout southern Maine, supporting them in persisting in high school, meeting academic criteria, maintaining good academic standing, and enrolling in a program of postsecondary education immediately after graduating from high school.

This is a temporary appointment for summer 2022, between June 21stand August 5th.

Pay for this position is $3,500 total, payable in biweekly installments.

Days and Hours :

Staff training begins: Wednesday, June 22

Virtual program begins: Monday, June 27

Residential Program weeks: June 26-July 1, July 10-15, July 24-29, August 1-5

Virtual program ends: Friday, August 5

Generally each week students will start virtual coursework on Monday and finish by Friday evening (weekends will be off). Staff will be in virtual classes as teaching assistants to support teachers and learn materials to help students outside of class time as needed. Guides will also facilitate electives and unstructured community meetings with students and year round staff in attendance. This position requires time spent during the day as well as some evening hours, with in-person events on the Gorham campus of USM, including scheduled weeks in the USM Gorham residence hall with overnights included. Hours for training and when residential staff are specifically on or off duty during the days students are in attendance will be provided during staff training, but will range from 30-40 hours/week.

Qualifications:

Required :
  • Bachelor’s degree
Preferred:
  • Experience teaching low-income and/or first generation college-bound high school students.
  • High school teaching experience and current Maine teaching certification in content area OR teaching experience at the college or university level.
  • Currently employed as teacher in a Upward Bound at USM partner school district OR currently employed by USM to teach college courses in content area.
