Job Summary:

This position is responsible for operating field equipment, performing field operations, vehicle and equipment maintenance, dairy facility maintenance, and manure system maintenance. This position will occasionally work independently on maintenance projects in the dairy facilities and will often work on projects as part of a team. Aptitude for skills such as mechanics, basic plumbing and electrical, and fabrication are necessary. General knowledge of field operations and crop production are also critical. This position is also required to maintain a valid commercial driver's license or have the ability to obtain one within a year. This position will occasionally be required to work nights and/or weekends.

Responsibilities:

Operates basic or complex equipment, applies pesticides, and performs physical labor to maintain institutional agriculture in support of institutional goals.
  • 40% Operates, cleans, and repairs basic and complex agricultural machines and equipment to ensure safety and operable functionality and to adhere to established rules, policies, and regulations
  • 5% Applies pesticides in accordance with best practices and established rules, policies, and regulations
  • 15% Stages equipment and machines in preparation of agricultural activities
  • 15% Maintains organization of designated facilities and associated supplies, notifies appropriate entities of damaged materials or the need for supply replenishment
  • 10% Documents completion of duties according to established policies and procedures
  • 5% Welds and fabricates cattle and field research equipment
  • 5% Maintains buildings and grounds
  • 5% Hauls cattle, crops and equipment

Education:

Qualifications:

1. Knowledge of methods utilized to plant, cultivate, harvest, and store crops.
2. Knowledge in the proper and safe use of farm vehicles, equipment, and machinery.
3. Knowledge in repair, servicing, and maintenance of farm equipment.
4. Ability to operate farm tractors and other types of agricultural equipment.
5. Ability to identify possible equipment malfunctions.
6. Ability to operate various types of hand and power tools used in maintenance work.
7. Capacity, flexibility, and willingness to learn and apply new methods and procedures as technology, equipment, and priorities change.
8. Basic knowledge of mechanics.
9. Basic welding and fabrication.
10. Reliability, sense of responsibility, and initiative to work for sustained periods of time with general supervision.
11. Confidence and initiative to solve minor recurring problems with general supervision.
12. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
13. Successful completion of required certifications, trainings, and courses required to have contact with University-owned cattle and work on a University-owned research farm.
14. Have the ability to communicate through oral, electronic, and/or written means in a manner that promotes teamwork with station managers, supervisors, coworkers, and researchers.
15. Experience in operating equipment, skilled trades such as fabricating, plumbing and mechanics, etc., and/or crop production.
16. Ability to obtain Commercial Driver's License within a year.
