Columbia Basin College ('CBC' or the 'College') seeks an Assistant Director for Disability Support Services to oversee daily operations, support strategic and operational planning, and collaborate on policy and program development of Columbia Basin College's disability services programs that support student's growth consistent with the mission of the College and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. The Assistant Director is responsible for supporting the development of the Disability Support Services Center and its services to the fullest potential, including professional development of Disability Support Services professional and classified staff. The Assistant Director for Disability Support Services reports to the Director of Disability Services.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership in the direction, management and supervision of Disability Support Services (DSS) professional and classified staff, fiscal, facility and programmatic resources and services for all activities within DSS;
  • Provide support and technical assistance for faculty and staff on the appropriate and reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities in compliance with state and federal disability laws;
  • Supervise, mentor and develop staff in the delivery of reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities, including intake, assessment of information, review of documentation, and notifications to and consultations with faculty and/or staff;
  • Hire, approve leave and timecard submissions for overtime eligible staff, conduct performance evaluations and counsel on performance, take or recommend corrective actions as needed, and make recommendations for civil service status for classified staff, and recommend dismissal of staff as appropriate;
  • Support the Disability Support Services office in providing a quality customer experience;
  • Assist the Accommodation Specialists in the creation of student Accommodation Plans as needed; provide guidance and leadership in the provision of those accommodations with instructors and departmental staff; assist the Director for Disability Support Services in the approval and denial of those accommodations as needed;
  • Responsible for quarterly, annual and/or special reports and documentation of accommodation and accessibility activities, and for program evaluation and assistance in creating policy;
  • Attend campus, community and state meetings as appropriate;
  • Serve as liaison within the campus community and with external entities as appropriate;
  • Possess knowledge and ability to implement assistive technology and digital accessibility in various educational settings (i.e. libraries, websites, classrooms, etc);
  • Maintain student records in accordance with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) guidelines;
  • May include cross-training to assist different programs within the unit or the Division of Instruction;
  • Maintain professional expertise in matters pertaining to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and World Wide Web Consortium (WC3) Guidelines through reading publications, materials and attending disability-related conferences and other professional development trainings and opportunities; and
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Social Work, Vocational Rehabilitation, Special Education or related field from an institutionally accredited college or university;
  • Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in working with disabled individuals in an educational setting;
  • Demonstrated understanding and commitment to federal and state rules and regulations pertaining to the ADA and Section 504; and
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Education, Social Work, Vocational Rehabilitation, Special Education or related field from an institutionally accredited college or university;
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in working with disabled individuals in an educational setting;
  • Demonstrated understanding and commitment to the mission of the community college; and
  • Experience in working with adult populations.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This is a twelve (12) month per year, full-time exempt position. The standard work hours will be Monday through Thursday 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Friday 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.; however, work hours may vary due to work demands and some evening and weekend work may be required. This position is overtime exempt.

WORKING CONDITIONS :

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility including having the ability to move materials on a regular basis such as files, books, office equipment, etc. and travel between buildings on campus. Manual dexterity and coordination are required to operate equipment such as computer keyboard, calculator, and standard office equipment.

Work environment includes office and other settings as appropriate. The noise level in the work area is typical of most office environments with telephones, personal interruptions, and background noises.
