POLICY WRITER

Salary:

Minimum $55,000 ANNUAL (12 months)

Job Summary:

The Office of Strategic Consulting works with academic and administrative units across campus to improve organizational effectiveness. A number of our staff serve as internal UW-Madison consultants, providing expertise in strategic planning, process improvement, organizational design and redesign, and enhancing organizational culture and climate. We also have expertise in facilitation, organizational change management, and leadership coaching. In addition to consulting, we provide project management and project delivery--specifically for the projects in the Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration's strategic portfolio.

The Policy Writer will report to the Policy Specialist and will work with policy managers across campus to update and revise policies in accordance with policy writing best practices, UW-Madison Policy Library styles and standards, and other applicable style guides. This position will be responsible for collaborating with policy specialists to prioritize and plan policy revisions and serving as a liaison to policy managers to coordinate the revision process, including helping draft revisions, editing and formatting policy content in accordance with applicable styles and standards, uploading content to the policy management software tool, and applying minimal html coding to policies.

Responsibilities:

Develops plans for editorial work and writes copy for external and internal audiences that enhances the goals, mission, and vision of the designated working unit.
  • 45% Authors and edits a range of materials for use by internal and external audiences
  • 20% Consults with internal and external stakeholders on editorial matters to ensure accuracy
  • 10% Obtains source approval of written materials and facilitates timely publication of written materials
  • 5% Assists in creating and implementing communication campaigns that align with work unit or program strategies
  • 10% Project planning and coordination.
  • 10% Research source documents and references for policies.

Education:

Required
Bachelor's Degree
Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications, or closely related field preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with experience writing organizational or public policy and/or procedures.

Qualifications:

Highly qualified candidates will have excellent writing and editing skills. They will demonstrate knowledge, experience and abilities in some or all of the following:

- Strong attention to detail and deadlines
- Project coordination and management
- Organizational and critical thinking skills
- Ability to work as part of a team and contribute toward shared goals
- Policy and/or procedure analysis
- Familiarity with policy writing and policy management best practices (e.g., use of plain language and inclusive/non-gendered language)
- Understanding of Associated Press (AP) or other editorial style guide
- Application of styles and standards

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Appointment Type, Duration:

Terminal, 24 month appointment.
This position has the possibility to be extended or converted to an ongoing appointment based on need and/or funding


Additional Information:

Please note that this is a two-year project position.
