Advising and Student Support Specialist – Graduate Students

Central Connecticut State University invites applications for an Advising and Student Support Specialist – Graduate Students in the School of Business . The incumbent of this position delivers comprehensive advising for students interested in pursuing one of the graduate degree programs, Central accelerate programs or official certificate programs in the School of Business, and assists in admission services, advising services, academic support programs and increased student satisfaction, retention, and graduation.

Supervision: May supervise paraprofessional and/or support staff.

Position Responsibilities:

Provides advising to and serves as a resource for prospective, incoming, transfer, and continuing graduate students concerning academic policies and standards, program and degree requirements and professional requirements for School of Business graduate students.

Participates and assists in the coordination of academic admission and advisement services.

Participates and assists in student and program assessment, accreditation, and assurance of learning activities.

Represents the School of Business Graduate Programs at Graduate Open House, career fairs, orientations, and at the graduate program SPA sessions.

Collaborates with other appropriate departments, such as Admissions, Graduate Studies, Registrar’s Office, Bursar’s Office, Financial Aid, etc., by troubleshooting and increasing student satisfaction and student retention.

Collaborates with faculty and staff, assists with the development and execution of academic support and advising programs, which may include career/internship advising, career fairs, resume preparation, etc.

Updates and maintains the graduate web pages and assists with the maintenance of the School-based web pages to highlight graduate student successes and ensure accurate information as it relates to graduate advising.

Ability to attend evening and weekend activities.

Performs other duties and responsibilities related to those above which do not alter the basic level of responsibility of the position.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree and three years of experience in relevant advising and student support services.
  • Experience working with students and advising students in professional degree programs. Experience using student information databases, such as Banner.
  • Experience with web-based technology.
  • Demonstrated strong oral and written communication and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to use standard business software.
Credentials and/or experience substantially comparable to the above may also be considered.

Part of the Greater Hartford area of 1.2 million residents, New Britain is centrally located in the state and is within easy reach of much of Connecticut and several metropolitan areas. New Britain’s population is characterized by a high degree of racial and ethnic diversity. Significant portions of its population come from Puerto Rico and Poland or consider themselves to be from the African-American, Italian, or Irish ethnic backgrounds. In addition to all that greater Hartford provides, New Britain is 40 minutes from Springfield, Massachusetts two hours from Boston, and two hours from New York City. It is also part of the Hartford-Springfield “Knowledge Corridor” and, therefore, within easy driving distance of a host of private and public institutions of higher education and many cultural opportunities.
