Position Information

Position Title Assistant Director of Academic Advising/Coordinator for Students in Academic Transition Overview
Provide direct advising support for students and contribute to the development of programs that foster awareness and success for students who are in the process of transitioning to/from the College or exploring curricular and co-curricular alternatives. Essential Duties:
1. Serve as the Student Success Center’s primary contact for students during academic transitions. Coordinate the planning and delivery of advising activities, programs, and services for these students, including transfer students, individualized majors, students exploring the addition or removal of a double major, minor/certificate or dual degree candidates, students seeking internship/research opportunities, students exploring leaves of absence, and students who may withdraw from the College and transfer to another institution. (30%)
2. Serve as the primary academic advisor to an assigned caseload of students and conduct a series of one-on-one meetings each semester. Meet with assigned advisees upon request to address emerging questions and concerns. Design and conduct group advising sessions to address common needs and interests. Check midterm/final grades and schedule meetings to discuss concerns, as necessary. Monitor the academic progress of assigned advisees through direct communication with faculty and/or staff who provide support services. Make referrals to academic support personnel and other campus resources. Ensure the provision of timely updates and reminders to students through email and other electronic media. (30%)
3. In collaboration with school advising representatives, and using reports and data analytics, identify students in select majors/programs who may require academic support or outreach. Make referrals to academic support personnel/services and other campus resources, as necessary and appropriate. Actively monitor students of concern through direct communication with faculty and/or staff who provide support services. Follow up on under-enrollment notices and grade or credit deficiencies to ensure that students have a plan to stay on track academically. (20%)
4. Provide daily drop-in advising and just-in-time support to students. Assist with managerial tasks related to academic advising. Serve as the SSC’s resident expert on students in academic transition and work with the Associate Dean/Director of Academic Advising to design/deliver related professional development programs for staff. Work with the Associate Dean and other members of the SSC staff to build and continually enhance the academic advising assessment program. Contribute to Student Success Center publications. Represent the Success Center on campus-wide committees and at campus-wide events, as requested. (20%) Marginal Duties:

  • Master’s Degree in education, counseling, college student personal, or a related field from an accredited institution required.
  • Two to three years’ relevant experience in academic advising, preferably in a higher education environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience designing and delivering programs/workshops that foster academic success and encourage students to take ownership of their college experience.
  • Experience working with faculty to enhance advising effectiveness and support students’ academic and personal well being.
  • Experience working with underrepresented groups – including, but not limited to, BIPOC, first-generation, and low-income students.
  • Strong knowledge of best practices in advising college students from a variety of racial, ethnic, socio-economic, and educational backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of student development theory, especially as it pertains to academic advising and student success.
  • Strong technology skills – including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office applications, student information systems, advising technologies, and website publishing applications.
  • Knowledge of advising assessment methods and reporting practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Some evening/weekend work required.
