Assistant/Associate Director of Career Development – STEM Lead



Job Description:

The Assistant/Associate Director of Career Development – STEM Lead assists the Director of Career and Professional Development in executing the Office’s strategic plan through advising students and alumni, facilitating recruitment opportunities, developing content for and facilitating events, programs and career trips, and other projects and initiatives as assigned. Other projects may include, but are not limited to, CPD data collection, analysis and reporting, support in maintaining CPD career resources and website, and alumni volunteer engagement and management. The Assistant/Associate Director will also serve as a liaison or work closely with key internal partners (e.g., Office of Alumni Engagement, University Advancement, faculty and staff) and external partners (e.g., recruiters, alumni) to create a culture of collaboration among a variety of stakeholders across the University. He/she/they will advise students and alumni in the areas of professional development, help develop and execute career-related programs designed to enhance their knowledge of career fields, and establish links between students and employers, alumni and professionals.

Essential Functions:
  • Serves as personal, academic and professional advisor to first-year through senior year students in STEM-related professional, summer and post-graduate academic opportunities.

  • Counsels and provides career advice to assist students and alumni in developing and applying personal, academic and job-search competencies and decision-making skills.

  • Reviews and advises graduate school application materials.

  • Supports the Director in developing, planning, marketing and executing professional development and industry-specific events, programs and career trips.

  • Develops relationships with faculty, staff, recruiters and alumni to ensure available experts/resources in desirable career fields.

  • Collects and manages data for internal databases while overseeing and maintaining data integrity.

  • Supports the Director and partners across the University (e.g., Office of Constituent Strategy, Office of Accreditation and Institutional Research, Office of Communications, academic units) with data reporting and analysis for internal and external audiences.

  • Utilizes data and provides research on areas of interest.

  • Maintains and updates CPD office resources and platforms such as Handshake and the resource library.

  • Promotes and Practices NACE Principles of Professional Conduct.

  • Performs additional related duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 4:30pm with occasional evening hours required.

Salary: Salary commensurate with experience. Pay and title of this position will be determined by the qualifications of the hired candidate.

Minimum Qualifications:

One to three years of progressively strategic full-time experience in college/university career services with experience and expertise including: working with students throughout career process from indecision/exploration through job acquisition, knowledge of career fields relevant to liberal arts graduates and alumni. In the absence of higher education experience, a combination of education and relevant experience providing a similar background and capabilities will be considered. Academic or professional experience in a STEM field preferred. This position requires the incumbent to portray a high energy level and be an active and successful team member. Must possess strong oral and written communication skills having a demonstrated ability to follow through. The independent nature of this role requires the incumbent to take initiative and possess a strong attention to detail.

Physical Requirements:
  • Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm as in handling.

  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.

  • Repetitive motions: Making substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

Working Conditions: The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

Types of Work: Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
