Position Purpose
The Donald Claflin Jewelry Studio is a well-equipped jewelry and metalsmithing studio for Dartmouth students and is part of the Hopkins Center for the Arts. The Jewelry/Metals Instructor is a benefits eligible half-time position and is responsible for the safe operation, mentorship/instruction and coordination of the studio space and its students. The position monitors student access and interaction, maintaining safety, smooth operation, instruction and creates a welcoming and enriching environment as an educational resource.

Bachelors or equivalent combination of education and experience
Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in the jewelry/metalsmithing discipline.
- Ability to articulate technical processes.
- Ability to help us develop a sense of community and comradery within our studio.
- Strong generalist in jewelry/metalsmithing.
- Working knowledge of all the basics in jewelry making and small metal construction techniques.
- Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse population.
- Detailed knowledge of safe usage of all relevant facilities, equipment and supplies.
- Strong organizational and administrative skills.
- Ability to work independently, setting priorities and with good follow through.
Preferred Qualifications
- At least two years professional teaching experience
- Proficiency with CAD, 3/D printing and jewelry casting
- Proficiency with Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, InDesign and other Creative Cloud applications
- BFA or MFA

Instruction
The Jewelry/Metals Instructor is responsible for teaching studio participants with varying experience as needed in a broad range of jewelry/metalsmithing topics. These topics can include design, fabrication, casting, finishing, enameling, lapidary, metal-forming, safety and more. Teaching includes an open studio/makerspace scenario, short, special topic classes and serving the needs of Dartmouth’s academic community, including class demonstrations and assisting students with certain academic assignments.

Studio Operation, Safety and Maintenance
In addition to instruction, this role is responsible for overseeing studio maintenance which can include managing student assistants; studio cleanliness, making sure that equipment is properly functioning and is well organized. This role supports the studio Director with respect to administrative responsibilities such as student attendance data, sales, inventory, materials purchasing and more.
