Position Title Presidential Fellow for Diversity Inclusion & Access (Open to Mines Faculty Only) The Opportunity

The Presidential Fellow for Diversity Inclusion & Access (DI&A) plays a lead role in implementing, updating, and assessing the impact of Mines’ Strategic Plan for DI&A. The Fellow collaborates cross functionally with the DI&A Council, campus leaders, and campus departments and units to help the university achieve its DI&A goals. This position is designed to be a 3 year rotation and reports directly to the President. The Fellow is expected to maintain connection to their core job at Mines so that they may rotate back to that position after their term concludes. The Fellow is expected to devote about 50% of their time to this position and the remainder to their academic appointment.

The Fellow serves as a thought-leader and strategic advisor for the university on DI&A best practices, policies, and communications. The Fellow promotes a campus-wide shared-responsibility approach to achieving DI&A goals and employ a consultancy mode for developing new DI&A initiatives and improving existing ones in collaboration with the DI&A Council and campus units and departments. The Fellow also identifies external funding opportunities for DI&A programs and projects and participates in and supports proposal writing efforts. The Fellow will manage and have the support of administrative staff to fulfill DI&A responsibilities. The Fellow also supervises the Director of Women in Science, Engineering & Mathematics (WISEM) program.

The successful applicant can expect to contribute significantly to DI&A at Mines, but there are many other benefits to this position. The fellow has a unique opportunity to collaborate with and support executive leadership. This is an ideal role for the applicant to get a sense of the duties related to a senior-level administrative position while having important impact to campus. This unique position enables the fellow to be a thought leader for DI&A and pursue and evaluate DI&A best practices and programs that support the mission and strategic goals of a public research university.

Responsibilities
  • Leads the development and updates of Mines Strategic Plan for DI&A working collaboratively with the DI&A Council and well as broadly across campus. Works with a broad group of leadership to support as appropriate functional areas in the fulfillment of the goals in our DI&A Strategic Plan. As the plan was never meant to be static, the Fellow often leads the visioning and efforts to develop new activities and programs as needed for the campus community.
  • Responds to campus-wide needs related to DI&A, and in consultation with university leadership DI&A Council and other university departments, helps develop or modify programs, policies, initiatives, or communications as needed. The fellow works with campus stakeholders to ensure impact and alignment with campus needs and the DI&A Strategic Plan, and coordinates with campus leadership on the best approach to implementing action. In some cases, implementation may be initiated by the DI&A team and in other cases implementation will be led by another functional area on campus.
  • Leads external DI&A fundraising efforts: including writing and submitting proposals such as to NSF, Department of Education Trio, industry, and private donors; coordinating others across campus to write and submit proposals; collaborating with VPRTT/ORA offices to support individual faculty proposal needs; collaborating directly with foundation to fundraise for DI&A e.g., for #idigmines, with private and corporate and foundation donors.
  • Support as appropriate DI&A related learning and development in support of Mines Strategic Plan: examples include Hiring Excellence in collaboration with HR; Admissions workshops on reducing bias in applicant review; DH, P&T and UP&T workshops on minimizing bias in faculty evaluation and promotion; coordinating DI&A sponsored learning and development opportunities such as minimizing microaggressions workshops and related learning communities; arranging and creating custom workshops as needed for campus.
  • Represent Mines on the state and national stage and help Mines determine best approaches to meeting State and Federal diversity requirements and objectives. Attend meetings with CDHE, represent Mines at the state and national organization for Diversity officers in Higher education, respond to opportunities to present and showcase Mines DI&A efforts (e.g. at speaking opportunities and conferences).
  • Respond to requests for support: depending on the request, the Fellow often supports Mines when responding to DI&A related occurrences. These are arranged in coordination with the Executive Leadership, Office of Title IX, HR, Student Life, Marketing & Communications, and Academic Affairs.
  • Oversee and support the Mines DI&A Team and key collaborations:
    • DI&A supports the Women in Science and Engineering Program (WISEM) The DI&A Fellow supervises the Director of WISEM, conduct employee performance reviews, advise/advocate regarding fundraising and consult on new and existing WISEM Program initiatives.
    • Conduct performance planning, evaluation, and professional development for DI&A employees.
    • Coordinate, recruit, and support the various DI&A committees and groups on campus.
    • Lead and facilitate DI&A Councils.
    • Coordinate engagement and activities with key DI&A collaborators.
    • Ensure communication with executive leadership.
  • Provide guidance on and participate in Mines DI&A events and programs.
Qualifications

Any current Mines academic faculty employee in good standing. The employee must have support and approval from their current supervisor and a plan to relieve them of some of their current duties to begin training for this role.

Education and Experience:
  • Earned master’s degree is required. PhD preferred.
  • A track record in leading and delivering diversity, inclusion and access programs or initiatives to completion while managing a range of internal stakeholders.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Deep knowledge of DI&A best-practices and DI&A research in a higher education context.
  • Demonstrable dedication to Mines DI&A mission.
  • Excellent facilitation, leadership, and project management skills.
  • Excellent presentation skills with experience in communicating with a variety of audiences and stakeholders who have differing views and knowledge around DI&A.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and conflict resolution skills
  • Exceptional time management skills to juggle multiple, high-stakes and high-profile priorities simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across disciplinary or departmental boundaries to achieve institutional strategic objectives and/or serve the competing needs of a university’s stakeholders.
The successful candidate must have the ability to devote approximately 50% of their time to this position. Ideally starting Fall 2022, the Fellow will take on the position at 50% capacity, where they are expected to continue working in their current role at approximately 50% capacity.

Pay Range

Mines is offering an academic year salary of current base salary plus stipend of $25,000 - $40,000 per year based on experience and academic rank. In addition, the candidate will be provided with 1 month of summer salary.
