Job Summary

The Distribution Center at the University of Colorado Boulder encourages applicants for the Materials Handler I ! This role will support two units within the Distribution Center: Moving & Hauling and Surplus Property. This position will assist with moving & hauling requests, auctions, and used furniture programs, and will be assisting in the handling receiving, screening, separating, dismantling, and recycling of incoming Surplus Property. Value determination may require assisting with detailed investigation on higher value assets, including scientific equipment, unique research items, and mechanized tools and equipment. Items with resell value will be set aside for auction, sales, or transferred to furniture surplus or electronics screening. This position may assist with using the AssetWorks software system to receive surplus into inventory, and to recycle or trash items with no resell value. This position also supports the campus sustainability initiative by looking for process improvements to reduce waste, promote reuse, refurbishments and recycling.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Moving and Hauling/Surplus Property Pickup
  • Assist in picking up Surplus Property from locations at CU Boulder and other campus locations.
  • Apply standard guidelines for the safe and efficient loading and unloading of items from the trucks.
  • Drive university vehicles as needed including CMV box trucks.
  • Move furniture, computers, workstations, materials and boxes up to and greater than 75 lbs. and push, pull or lift items greater than 100 lbs. using equipment and/or devices designed for such applications.
  • Set-up and disassemble furniture, workstations, or equipment by applying a variety of hand tools and/or power tools.
  • Operate a variety of university vehicles and equipment including forklift in conjunction with providing services offered by Property Services and provide equipment and labor needs for special events or essential services.
  • Occasionally load and transport trash and debris for the purpose of disposal.
  • Notify appropriate personnel of safety incidents, near misses and all potential hazards. Maintain safe work practices and participate in department safety meetings.
  • Support sustainability initiatives as directed by supervisors and managers.
Warehousing and Receiving
  • Assist the Surplus Property Coordinator in determining the value of surplus items, doing investigations as needed and moving items to appropriate warehouse locations.
  • Help the campus partners determine placement location of inventory and assist in efforts to organize and maintain the back warehouse.
  • Apply standard guidelines for the safe and efficient breaking down of items for trash or recycling.
  • Operate fork lift as needed to perform warehousing duties.
  • Assist in receiving items off trucks returning from surplus property pickups, and check incoming items against AssetWorks to ensure tags and data are accurate, fixing inventory labels on items or in the system as needed.
Auction and Sale Support
  • Assist with auctions and sales by staging and pricing items and assisting customers.
  • Assist in clearing Distribution Services warehouse space of auction or sale related items in preparation for normal business activities.
  • Resolve sale item issues using AssetWorks inventory information before, during, and after a sale or auction as needed. Determine, disposition, and move items that didn't sell.
  • Take pictures, capture item information, or offer customer support for online sales as needed.
  • Participate in process improvement efforts as directed by supervisor or manager and help with all other Property Services functions and other duties as needed.
What You Should Know
  • This position's work schedule will be Monday - Friday from 7:30 am - 4:00 pm. This position may have to work an occasional Saturday for auctions.
  • All University of Colorado Boulder employees are required to follow the campus COVID-19 vaccine requirement .

What We Require
  • One year of experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position. Appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Must be a Colorado resident to apply.
  • Must have a valid State of Colorado driver's license.
  • Must have the ability to acquire a CMV with the first three months.
What You Will Need
  • The ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • The ability to work independently and in a team setting.
What We Would Like You To Have
  • CMV certification.
  • FAMIS software experience.
  • AssetWorks software experience.
  • Knowledge of the CU Boulder campus.
