Job Summary/Basic Function

A Dissertation Chair for the Department of Psychology is an online adjunct responsible for the administration, facilitation, and teaching of online classes. In addition, this position involves mentoring doctoral candidates in the dissertation process. Candidates must have the academic credentials to teach and/or mentor research in one or more of the following areas: research, statistics, industrial/organizational psychology, physiological psychology, social psychology, developmental psychology, neuropsychology, cognitive psychology, and tests and measurements.

Instructional and administrative duties include grading, moderating interactive forums, roster verification, weekly written and video announcements, responding to student emails, academic and professional mentorship, and building relationships while under the supervision of Online Instructional Mentors.

Dissertation Chair duties include:
  • Mentor candidates in the dissertation research process so research is theoretically grounded and methodologically sound and will make a contribution to the discipline.
  • Guide candidates in the IRB process.
  • Ensure candidates comply with dissertation policies and procedures as outlined in relevant program or dissertation handbook.
  • Provide regular and timely feedback to students.
  • Review candidates’ manuscripts and provide substantive and formative feedback within the required timeline.
  • Lead virtual dissertation defense meetings.
  • Other duties relevant to the dissertation process.
Other responsibilities include:
  • Teach material from approved curriculum in accordance with assigned schedule to ensure student satisfaction.
  • Assist students in achieving completion of objectives and learning outcomes.
  • Provide regular and timely feedback to students.
  • Maintain productive contact with students and offer assistance to students as needed.
  • Advise students in matters related to academics, attendance, and behaviors.
  • Motivate students to actively participate in all aspect of the educational process.
  • Maintain and report student grades and attendance in accordance with university policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Doctorate in Psychology or related field.
  • Degree must be from an institution accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Must have completed a traditional qualitative or quantitative dissertation.
  • Must demonstrate experience in qualitative or quantitative research methods in the field or discipline
  • Understand and articulate discipline from a biblical worldview.
  • Full doctrinal compatibility with Liberty University.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing to convey information.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate remotely.
  • Adequate interpersonal, customer service, and presentation skills.
  • Creative, innovative, and problem-solving skills.
  • Organizational skills that facilitate the completion of assignments and tasks in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and online Learning Management Systems.
  • Familiarity with video conferencing platforms.
  • Able to obtain and maintain licenses if applicable as required by state or accrediting commissions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated strengths in teaching & research mentorship.
  • Established record of research evidenced by intellectual and professional contributions to the field through peer-reviewed publication and conference presentations.
  • Demonstrated strengths in teaching & mentoring.
  • Experience teaching and/or mentoring students in an online environment.
  • Experience mentoring doctoral dissertation students in research.
  • Superior interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated mastery of Microsoft Office suite and online Learning Management Systems.
  • Must work well with others and be able to work at a pace that will not delay the progress of a dissertation candidate toward timely completion of the doctoral degree.
