BASIC FUNCTION:
Perform journey level plumbing maintenance, trouble-shooting, repair and/or renovation of buildings, facilities and equipment. Inspect buildings, facilities and equipment to ascertain needed repairs and make recommendations to the Plumber Team Leader.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Perform journey level plumbing work in any or all of the following categories:
  • Underground piping systems including but not limited to domestic water, sewer storm drains and other similar systems.
  • Fixtures including, but not limited to, faucets, toilets, traps and drains, water fountains and other similar devices.
  • Install building equipment, including but not limited to, heaters, heat exchangers, pumps and other components.
  • Install meters, valves, regulators, safety devices and other components necessary to properly control liquid and gas systems.
  • Perform work according to manufacturer's specifications, departmental guidelines, trade practices, blueprints, shop drawings and schematics.
  • Inspect buildings, facilities and equipment to ascertain required repairs and make recommendations to the Plumber Team Leader.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, specifications, shop drawings, schematic manufacturer's specifications, and other reference materials to determine appropriate job requirements and procedures.
  • Maintain proficiency at current level and continually update knowledge through appropriate courses, seminars, publications and contacts with others in the trade.
  • Responsible for adhering to policies, procedures, and practices on safety and operational instructions, and comply with rules and regulations applicable to building codes.
  • Develop and maintain an active safety program for the plumbing shop, consistently following safety practices appropriate to the trade and complying with rules and regulations established by the University, state, and federal agencies.
  • This position is considered "essential personnel", and may be assigned work in other areas during emergency situations.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • May be required to assist with maintaining files of utility and building systems diagrams generated from field investigation.
  • Participate in appropriate training sessions and seminars.
  • Must possess demonstrated ability to read and interpret blueprints and systems diagrams.
  • Perform other duties as requested by supervisor.
LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

Valid driver's license required. Current Journeyman or Master's Plumbing or Pipefitter license required.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

The position is subject to outside work where extreme hot and cold temperatures may be encountered. The potential exists where noise, vibration, hazards and atmospheric conditions and oils might also be encountered. Use of protective equipment is required. Must have the physical ability to perform all job functions and duties. Ability to move through limited access spaces.


Requirements:

A high school diploma or GED is required. Must have the ability to effectively work individually or in teams as well as with diverse groups. Ability to work effectively in a service oriented environment subject to frequently changing priorities. Must be able to follow through and carry out assignments. Must have effective oral and written communication skills and the ability to problem solve and use sound judgement. Must be able to lift and carry up to 80 pounds and lift and transport piping and equipment with others in excess of 200 pounds.

Must be able to push and pull heavy loads listed above. Must be able to stoop and bend for long periods of time and work in confined spaces. Work can take place on roofs or require the use of a ladder or other elevated work platforms and may require working out of doors in inclement weather. This position involves traveling throughout the university and could, on occasion, require bending, reaching, ascending and descending ladders and stairs, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, talking, and hearing.
