About the Opportunity

About:

The College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH) combines Northeastern University's signature focus on experiential learning with the rigorous study of society, culture, politics, and ethics. CSSH is the home of Experiential Liberal Arts, an innovative framework of integrated study and experiential opportunities. The college's 17 schools, departments, and programs—with disciplines ranging from economics and history, to English and international affairs, form an interdisciplinary group of scholars with global perspectives and a culture of inclusion. Our expert faculty connects liberal arts education with the challenges of our time, fostering ethical reasoning and critical thought, with attention to the enduring significance of history, literature, and culture. Strategic Areas of Focus for the college's education and research are (1) Resilience, Sustainability, Health, and Equity, (2) Cultural Transformations, Governance, and Globalization, and (3) Network Science, Computational Social Science, Digital Humanities, and Information Ethics.

CSSH research teams of faculty, students, and staff examine a wide range of questions, using diverse methods and interdisciplinary and community partnerships. Their research addresses pressing problems of the day and traces the roots of these problems. CSSH teams are highly engaged in priority research areas including sustainability, health, security, and artificial intelligence (AI). Additional information about the college's research can be found on the CSSH Research webpage.

The College is strongly committed to fostering excellence through diversity and enthusiastically welcomes applications from members of groups underrepresented in higher education administration.

One or more days each week may involve working remotely, based on operational needs and in consultation with the supervisor, and consistent with university policies and guidance.

Responsibilities:

The Associate Director of Research Development will report to the Associate Dean for Research and work closely with the Provost's Office and faculty, staff, graduate students, chairs, directors of CSSH and university-level centers/institutes, Northeastern's Community-Engaged Teaching and Research Team, and other leadership. They will support the overall college research program, select large-scale research initiatives, and grow the research enterprise at the college. These priorities will be accomplished through targeted activities to build long-term capacity and by providing strategic and tactical support across the college and in partnership with foundations, industry, government agencies, other Northeastern University colleges, and other Northeastern units. Work with other Northeastern Units includes close collaboration with CSSH Research Administration, Northeastern University Development Office, and Northeastern University Research Enterprise Services (NU-RES), to support the development of CSSH research including efforts led out of CSSH research and in which CSSH researchers are engaged across the university.

The individual will be an integral member of the team, helping researchers to (1) identify and analyze foundation, industry, and government funding opportunities and connect with funders, (2) support the development of proposals to funders, (3) provide logistical and project management support for proposal preparation, and coordinate efforts with the central university research development team, (4) support the development of inter-disciplinary and multi-generational research teams, and (5) manage various internal projects.

The position requires extensive interaction with many internal/external stakeholders. Principally this will include Northeastern faculty, students, and staff, but also includes external groups (e.g., outside faculty, and collaborators and funders from foundations, local, state, and federal government, industry, and foreign entities) . The job provides a unique challenge in that the multiple constituencies have simultaneously different and overlapping needs which must be anticipated and accommodated.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree required; Doctorate preferred.
  • Experience in research development and management of collaborative projects.
  • Proposal writing experience, preferably in the social sciences and humanities.
  • Experience with federal grant mechanisms and grant applications (additional experience with public and private agencies preferable).
  • Strong ability to synthesize and communicate information and data cohesively and succinctly.
  • The ability to effectively prioritize, integrate and balance the various ongoing efforts under strict deadlines.
  • Outstanding writing and editing skills.
  • Superior organizational capabilities and the ability to work independently with strong self-initiative.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Must be flexible, work well in a team and in a fast-paced environment.
