Associate Director, Counseling Services
Join our community and experience Emerson College!

Reporting to the Associate Dean and Director of Counseling, Health and Wellness, the Associate Director, Counseling Services, will oversee and provide leadership for Emerson's counseling services. Licensed and pre-licensed staff, pre-doctoral graduate students, post-doctoral students, and prescribers will report to this position.

The Associate Director provides supervision, clinical leadership, guidance, and direction for the counseling services staff. You will oversee, evaluate, and implement operational protocols as well as clinical activities in accordance with your licensing association ethical principles, including current compliance standards for staff licensure and certifications. You will maintain a client caseload, but at a reduced level to account for additional organizational responsibilities. This position also works closely with the Associate Dean and the other Associate Directors to provide leadership to the department and support the integration of services.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Manage the daily operations of the counseling unit
  • Provide direction, mentorship and supervision to staff, including licensed and pre-licensed professional staff, pre-doctoral graduate students, post-doctoral students, and psychiatrists
  • Resolve any complex/escalated matters
  • Monitor existing departmental operational processes ensuring they are compliant
  • Evaluate existing departmental operations for increased effectiveness and make appropriate process improvements
  • Manage relationships with external partners/vendors; create and maintain a referral network for therapeutic and emergency services with area clinicians, mental health clinics, and hospitals
  • Maintain oversight of higher risk clients, including crisis intervention/emergency services and support for residence education staff


Your Other Responsibilities:
  • Direct and assume primary responsibility for backup on-call schedule
  • Synchronize post-hospitalization process and protocols for students
  • Manage schedule and record-keeping system for the center
  • Work collaboratively with internal college stakeholders and students on a variety of complex issues
  • Other projects and duties as assigned


Your Skills and Experience:
  • Doctorate in clinical or counseling psychology, licensure as a psychologist in Massachusetts, or Master's Degree in Social Work, Master's Counseling or Master's in Marriage and Family Counseling (specific to discipline)
  • Background in psychological crises, intervention and management
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills, with the ability to manage multiple/competing priorities
  • Ability to effectively work with students from a broad range of identities and life experiences
  • A commitment to social justice, equity, and inclusion
  • Exceptional written, verbal and organizational skills; works as a team player
  • 7 years of demonstrated direct clinical experience and 3-5 for progressive management experience

Grade of Position: A18E

Scheduled Weekly Hours: 36.25

Salary: $89,800.00
