Job Description

As a member of the NI&S Applications Administration team, the manager will contribute and lead a team that administers and manages supported services. Services include Voice, Voicemail, Contact Center, SIP Trunking, Emergency Telephone service, Security Camera System, the Virginia Tech's emergency notification system (VT Alerts), including the Annunciator and Message Board services, Central logging service (CLS), and network backup services that meet the operational, academic, social, and research needs of over 33,000 students and 8,000 faculty/staff.

Although not limited to the following, the position's responsibilities will include:
- Manage and mentor a team of administrators, providing management oversight, guidance, coaching, and leadership to promote a flexible and collaborative atmosphere
- Lead administrators in the day to day operational activities necessary for deployment,
maintenance and management of systems and technologies including equipment installation, configuration changes, and software updates
- Comply with principles of change, risk, and resource management to ensure the continued reliability, performance, and security of systems and services
- Provide excellent customer service and technical support to monitor, troubleshoot, debug and resolve performance issues
- Champion and promote service improvements on an ongoing basis to continually improve quality and customer satisfaction. Develop and understand key service metrics and make recommendations for improvement
- Minimize production system downtime through redundant designs and effective recovery solutions
- Assist in the development of integration tools and configuration management strategies to expedite service provisioning, problem resolution, and configuration changes
- Assist in the development of quarterly Objective and Key Results (OKRs)
- Research and evaluate pertinent solutions, processes, features, and technologies. Present potential solutions to senior staff and management
- Engage in approved professional development opportunities such as training sessions and conferences. Engage employees in developing goals, executing plans, and delivering results
- Motivate employees to accomplish goals by communicating clearly and consistently
- Utilize collaboration and influence skills to achieve successful outcomes within the networking team and with other operational, support, and design teams
- Participate in an on-call rotation

Required Qualifications

- Extensive experience in an enterprise environment.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently with little direction
- Experience designing, developing, testing, and deploying enterprise-class technology solutions
- Ability to lead cross-functional technical teams in a hybrid work environment, ensuring that project objectives are completed
- Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose complex problems in many disciplines and technologies
- Able to identify challenges or opportunities, take ownership, and act on them independently
- Advanced knowledge of fundamental LAN/WAN technologies and IP protocols to include HTTP, DNS, DHCP
- Significant experience with Linux shell commands
- Experience working with and troubleshooting network VLANs and IP-subnetting

Preferred Qualifications

- Bachelor's Degree in a STEM field or related equivalent experience in IT operations
- Demonstrated expert knowledge of technologies through one or more relevant industry certifications
- Prior experience managing IT teams
- Understanding of ISDN and PSTN connectivity
- Experience working with Session Border Controllers (SBC) and firewalls
- Familiarity with deploying an endpoint management system for an enterprise unified communications environment
- Experience designing and implementing log aggregation platform services, preferably Splunk
- Experience administrating notification systems such as PagerDuty, or OpsGenie
- Experience with the implementation of enterprise network backup systems, preferably Tivoli Storage Manager
- Experience administering and managing enterprise security camera systems, such as Genetec
- Experience implementing and administering metrics and monitoring systems such as Zabbix, Prometheus
- Experience with network applications and experience using Application Program Interfaces (APIs), programming and scripting languages useful for application integration
