Job Description

Position Summary:
Student Affairs at Virginia Tech seeks a high energy, innovative thinker who is passionate about instituting a transformational approach to student governance through operational excellence. The Deputy Director serves as the deputy advisor to the Undergraduate Student Senate (USS) and works alongside students to develop all strategic operations for undergraduate student governance. This initiative focuses on community building, inclusion and belonging, student engagement and civic democracy through servant leadership. The Deputy Director for Strategic Operations, reports to the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs & ExperienceVT and Senior Advisor to the Undergraduate Student Senate (USS). This is a critical leader who is responsible for supporting the development of a transformational student experience through undergraduate governance. The Undergraduate Student Senate at Virginia Tech strives to operate as a servant leadership organization that practices governance in the spirit of Ut Prosim. The deputy director must demonstrate an unwavering commitment to Virginia Tech’s Aspirations for Student Learning, the Principles of Community, inclusion and belonging and supports a senior leadership team that champions ExperienceVT.

The Deputy Director will supervise an operations coordinator, a fiscal technician, a graduate assistant, and a team of students. Additionally, the Deputy Director partners with colleagues across various offices, departments, to support successful operations for the USS.

Specific duties include:
• Serve as the operations leader for the undergraduate student senate.
• Supervise, evaluate, hire, train, (1) Operations Coordinator, (1) full-time Fiscal Technician, and (1) Graduate Assistant and a team of student employees.
• Build and publish an annual operations calendar for the Student Senate.
• Develops a leadership development plan for the USS
• Cultivate a culture of programming within the USS
• Advise the Commission on Undergraduate Student Affairs.
• Plan, attend, and execute oversight of various events for the organizations (e.g., ASGA Conferences, COSGA, and other conferences, Hokie Day, Elections, ACC Advocacy Day, Town Hall, etc.).
• Provide budget oversight and advice on USS fiscal operations.
• Develop the schedule of meetings and events for student leaders.
• Oversee scholarship selection and award processes.
• Develop a strong leadership development plan for the elected members of the USS.
• Works closely with the Senior Advisor to develop strategic operations for the USS.
• Serve as the Deputy Advisor to the Undergraduate Student Senate.
• Create systems to ensure accurate documents, minutes, voting records and files.
• Attend the University Council meeting and all meetings related to student governance.
• Create strong campus wide relationships with campus stakeholders to advance the reputation of the USS.
• Mentor students in a manner that represents Ut Prosim and the Ten Characteristics of Servant Leadership.
• Alongside students, oversee, management, and maintain all USS communications to include, the website, social media and messaging.
• Implement goals of the Taskforce Report.
• Attend all USS meetings and major events and programs.
• Provide support to advance ExperienceVT

Required qualifications:
The selected individual must demonstrate a deep commitment to student success with a passion for mentoring student experiences and an unrelenting commitment to student success, learning, and inclusion. As an integral part of the Advising Team, the Deputy Director must demonstrate strong operational management skills along with a high level of emotional intelligence. This position requires consistent and robust in-person work with students, faculty, administrators and state political leaders. A master’s degree in a related field is required. The ability to understand student-development theory is essential along with a steadfast commitment to the philosophy that the Virginia Tech campus is a learning laboratory that is enhanced by high impact experiences (HIEs). The successful candidate will be team-oriented and demonstrate adaptability, and initiative. They should demonstrate vision and creativity in program design and promotion, as well as strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. The successful candidate will demonstrate a growth mindset and embrace change as an opportunity for creativity, learning, and improvement. Experience working with diverse populations of students in complex, institutional setting is required, along with a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion. Preferred qualifications:
Preferred qualifications include a master’s degree in Higher Education, Human Development, or a relevant field; strong ability to lead and advise others and execute a clear vision, experience with campus-wide engagement and strategic planning; and creativity in identifying, brainstorming, implementing, and evaluating, unmet needs of underserved and underrepresented communities on campus.
