Summer Camp Preschool Teacher



Basic Function
Supervise students focusing on their health and safety; responsible for curriculum development; planning and preparation for instruction; establish a developmentally appropriate learning environment in the classroom; communication and conferences with parents; developmental evaluation of children's progress; actively engage and interact with children in a positive, energetic, and encouraging manner. The teacher is expected to be actively involved in all aspects of the classroom. Adapt teaching methods and materials to meet the interests and learning styles of children. Establish and enforce rules of behavior for children in their classrooms. Provide basic needs for children

Essential Functions
1. Plan curriculum and lesson plans based on the state-approved curriculum.
2. Participate in team-teaching approach.
3. Communicate effectively with parents and children.
4. Plan and maintain a safe, clean learning environment and ensure the well-being and safety of the children in their care. Provide for social distancing.
5. Prepare materials and supplies in advance for activities.
6. Supervise children in classroom activities, during naptime and outdoor playtime.
7. Assume responsibility for communicating with parents, planning and participating in parent-teacher conferences and completing developmental assessment of children.
8. Set-up and clean-up classroom multiple times throughout the day to maintain a sanitized environment.
9. Maintain discipline and supervision of children. Manage classroom behavior and enforce rules.
10. Observe, see, hear and respond promptly to children's needs, emergencies and conflicts.
11. Safely escort and supervise children outside as they cross a parking lot (within pedestrian crosswalk) to reach the playground.
12. Provide constant attention to preschoolers engaged in appropriate planned physical activities to meet developmental needs.
13. Prepare required reports pertaining to the group; accurate and timely recordkeeping.
14. Participate in professional development annually (minimum 12 clock hours) and acquire and maintain a Maryland Child Care Credential at a level 4 or higher.
15. Perform such similar, comparable or related duties as may be assigned or required.

Job Qualifications

Qualifications
Knowledge:
  • Bachelors or Associates degree in early childhood education, development or related field;
  • Or hold a teaching certificate from MSDE or other state for early childhood;
  • Or 90 clock hours or equivalent of approved early childhood coursework with a high school diploma (must consist of 45 hours of "Curriculum" and 45 hours of "Child Development")
Experience: Minimum of 1 year of experience working with preschoolers in an approved setting; Or 1 year of college (30 semester hours); OR Combination of experience and college equal to 1 year. Must successfully undergo fingerprinting and a criminal background check and pre-employment physical evaluation.

Skills/Aptitude: Must be able to reach a child 20 to 30 feet away within 30 seconds without endangering the staff person's health, either indoors or outside on the playground. Safely navigate the playground area which is covered in approximately a six-inch deep surface of wood chips, especially in the event of having to respond to a child who is hurt or playing in an unsafe manner. Must be capable of lifting a weight of up to 40 pounds. Lift materials from the floor to a waist-high table when necessary. Be able to walk, climb stairs, squat, kneel, sit on floor, bend, stoop, stretch, push, pull, see, hear, and speak with children to engage them during instruction and to ensure children's health and safety. Crouch to a child's height, maintain eye contact at the child's level, sit on the floor, and stand tall enough to reach children on the highest piece of equipment. Adapt to a noise level which may be moderate to loud.

Working Conditions: Preschool/daycare center environment. This position has been identified as having a potential risk for occupational exposure to potentially infectious material; as such, this position is required to be offered the Hepatitis B Vaccine at no cost to the employee, and annual training on Preventing Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens must be completed.
